“Zona di guerra…”
Il volume d’apertura di Dampyr, intitolato Il Figlio del Diavolo, si apre con questa didascalia. Il mio primo incontro con questa serie a fumetti targata Bonelli, creata da Mauro Boselli e Maurizio Colombo, risale a quando avevo circa 10 anni. A quei tempi la mia cultura fumettistica si fermava ai Peanuts, Lupo Alberto e qualche fumetto Marvel sparso, comprati giusto perché poco tempo prima erano usciti i primi due film di Spider-Man.
Quando i miei genitori mi regalarono quei tre numeri di Dampyr, contenuti in una raccolta della “Serie Oro” di Repubblica, mi trovai per la prima volta di fronte ad un tipo di narrazione totalmente diverso: vampiri, sangue, azione, mondi sotterranei, complotti politici, conflitti cosmici e un sacco di folklore e filosofia nascosti qua e là.
Dampyr e la passione per il fumetto
Dampyr rappresenta il mio primo contatto con il fumetto Bonelli, da ben prima che diventassi un lettore accanito di collane come Dylan Dog e Julia; ma non solo, mi ha aperto anche una porta verso un fumetto più “adulto”. Grazie ad esso ho percepito per la prima volta quanta profondità si potesse raggiungere attraverso questo medium, molto prima che i miei mi regalassero anche Watchmen, convinti si trattasse di un normalissimo fumetto di supereroi.
(Vi ricordate la scena di Rorschach con i due cani? Io purtroppo sì).
L’annuncio di casa Bonelli
Credo sia innanzitutto per tutti questi motivi che ho fatto salti di gioia quando un paio di settimane fa al Lucca Comics sono state annunciate l’uscita di un lungometraggio su Dampyr e la creazione di un “Bonelli Cinematic Universe”. Lo sviluppo della sceneggiatura ha visto coinvolti direttamente i creatori e gli autori della serie originale. Sembra che il film sarà basato in gran parte sui primi due volumi di quest’ultima. Saperlo mi rende felice, prima di tutto perché quasi sicuramente non ci troveremo davanti ad un altro film come quello di Dylan Dog (quello con Brandon Routh, un’altra cosa che vorrei dimenticare). In secondo luogo perché, a mia opinione, i primi due numeri di Dampyr raccontano una delle storie più belle, interessanti ed inquietanti uscite negli ultimi vent’anni.
l’ineluttabilità della guerra…
Credo che Dampyr abbia solo nelle sue premesse una sorta di valenza culturale. La zona di guerra in cui veniamo gettati fin dalla prima pagina è quella dell’ex Jugoslavia, ancora in corso ai tempi delle prime storie. La serie, pur sviluppando una trama a sé, racconta lateralmente un periodo storico recentissimo, le conseguenze più crude di un conflitto che ho spesso l’impressione si tenda a non osservare con la dovuta attenzione. La scelta di non ambientare la storia in un luogo definito è significativa: non importa davvero in quale guerra ci si trovi, per chi la subisce gli effetti sono sempre gli stessi. Il primo protagonista che incontriamo nella storia, il soldato Emil Kurjak, ci pone direttamente di fronte ad questa triste verità:
Vuoi sapere qual è la parte veramente orribile di questa storia? Che un bel giorno i nostri leader, quelli che ci hanno mandato a ucciderci a vicenda e a morire, si siederanno ad un tavolo con il nemico e torneranno di nuovo amici. Anzi, più di prima! Tutto sarà dimenticato.
Nella prima storia di Dampyr l’umanità viene mostrata fin da subito come nient’altro che carne da macello. Una massa sacrificabile e spersonalizzata, senza speranze o identità, utilizzata per i propri fini da qualcuno che ha più potere di loro. Credo che ciò che rende speciale la prima storia di Dampyr sia proprio il senso di ineluttabilità ed impotenza che traspare in ogni tavola, e che viene ulteriormente rafforzato nel momento in cui Kurjak e i suoi compagni si trovano di fronte al soprannaturale nell’immaginario villaggio di Yorvolak. I principali antagonisti della storia, i vampiri che hanno sterminato l’intera popolazione e con cui Kurjak si ritrova a combattere, considerano anch’essi l’umanità come bestie di cui nutrirsi.
…E la svolta paranormale
I vampiri sono rappresentati come esseri senza una vera personalità e sono capitanati da un “Maestro della Notte”, una sorta di vampiro superiore che ha totale controllo mentale sul suo branco di sottoposti. I Maestri della Notte sono i leader dei vampiri e spesso si nascondono tra le pieghe della politica e delle istituzioni, prosperando nei periodi di guerra e influenzando la storia umana.
In Dampyr la tematica della guerra come massacro simbolico di schiavi che agiscono sotto il controllo di esseri superiori è rappresentata sotto la forma sia del conflitto in Jugoslavia sia della guerra tra umani e vampiri. Questo senso di mancanza di controllo viene veicolato anche attraverso il concetti di “sopravvivenza” e di “casualità” durante lo sviluppo della storia. Kurjak si ritrova catapultato in una guerra che non ha scatenato, e per sopravvivere si ritrova per caso a combattere con degli esseri soprannaturali.
I personaggi principali
Allo stesso modo Harlan Draka, il vero protagonista della storia, viene rappresentato inizialmente come un ciarlatano. Uno che per sopravvivere millanta di essere un Dampyr, un mezzo vampiro dai grandi poteri in grado di uccidere altri vampiri, per raggirare i superstiziosi della zona a scopo di lucro:
«Sono solo uno che ti sta prendendo in giro da mezz’ora, soldatino!»
Solo in seguito, reclutato a forza da Kurjak, scopre casualmente che il suo sangue è davvero veleno per i vampiri, e si ritrova a tentare di sopravvivere nell’assedio di Yorvolak.
Il terzo personaggio che incontriamo in questa storia, la vampira Tesla, è inizialmente un’antagonista trasformata contro la sua volontà da un Maestro della Notte. Lei non ha controllo sul proprio agire e può solo tentare di sopravvivere adattandosi alla sua nuova vita.
In altre parole, credo che la serie di Dampyr racconti lateralmente la tematica della lotta disperata per la sopravvivenza, della mancanza di vie di fuga da una condizione inevitabile, il senso di impotenza, ed allo stesso tempo la forza dell’azione dell’individuo che tenta di ribaltare questa condizione, di distruggerla.
E questo solo nella prima storia.
Un cult ancora dopo molti anni
La serie, seppur con i suoi alti e bassi, presenta spesso trame di un certo spessore, che si rifanno a leggende popolari provenienti da tutto il mondo e da ogni cultura. Esse nascondono una forte critica sociale e comprendendo al loro interno un ampia gamma di generi letterari, che spaziano dall’horror, all’azione, al dramma e persino al giallo.
Il tributo
Nell’illustrazione ho cercato di riassumere alcuni tratti salienti della storia principale senza raccontare troppo. La chiesa al centro dell’immagine è la stessa in cui si rifugiano i protagonisti durante l’assedio dei vampiri. Con il resto dell’ambientazione ho cercato di rendere sia la pericolosità di questi ultimi sia gli effetti della guerra. In alto, da sinistra a destra, ci sono i tre protagonisti della serie: una Tesla non esattamente amichevole, un Harlan che si è appena tagliato il palmo della mano per bagnare le armi con il suo sangue e contrastare i vampiri (come succede spesso nella storia) e un Kurjak che non vorrei mai trovarmi davanti.
Un futuro tutto da scoprire
L’idea di poter vedere questi tre personaggi interpretati da attori in carne ed ossa mi esalta, e mi piace l’idea che la bellezza di queste storie possa arrivare anche ad un pubblico meno interessato ai fumetti; in generale inoltre sono curioso di vedere quali saranno i prossimi sviluppi in casa Bonelli. Tra l’annuncio di una serie tv su Dylan Dog coprodotta da James Wan (il regista di Saw –l’enigmista e Insidious, per intenderci), la creazione di storie crossover con Batman, e lo sviluppo di un universo cinematografico condiviso targato Bonelli, sembra che ci siano numerosi cambiamenti in atto ed infinite possibilità su ciò che vedremo in futuro.
Nel frattempo, recuperatevi i primi due numeri di Dampyr. Se preferite storie più investigative o introspettive consiglio di dare uno sguardo anche a Fantasmi di sabbia e Sotto il ponte di pietra, rispettivamente ispirate alle vecchie storie dei luoghi infestati e alla leggenda del Golem di Praga.
