«Connor sei sicuro che la strada sia quella giusta?»
«Sicurissimo, dai muovetvi fannulloni, quella succulenta Dracotigre di Ern aspetta solo noi.»
Altre sei ore separarono Connor e la sua squadra dalla caverna della Dracotigre, una delle bestie più feroci di tutta Meridos. Le leggende narrano che la carne di questo animale mitico sia talmente nutriente da poter sfamare un intero plotone per giorni anche nel bel mezzo di un deserto.
«Per fortuna quell’ adorabile nonnetto lungo la strada ci ha indicato la via giusta per le Montagne della Furia, altrimenti ci saremmo persi in quella stramaledetta foresta. A cosa stavi pensando, stupido idiota, quando ti ho chiesto se la direzione fosse giusta?»
Rennon era stanco, ma tutta la squadra ansimava per il lungo tragitto percorso. La strada da Saith, punto di partenza, alle montagne di Ern non è troppo complicato; l’unico ostacolo da affrontare è il Boschetto del Groviglio che circonda tutta la regione di Ern e ne fa parte. Ern è situata nel cuore di Meridos: le terre abitate di questa regione non sono molto vaste ed è perlopiù occupata dalle Montagne della Furia e dalla suddetta foresta. La regione, anticamente, era abitata da simpatiche creaturine chiamate elfi-nani e che, a detta delle leggende, non superavano l’altezza di cinquanta centimetri. La popolazione elfica autoctona si estinse durante la Grande Guerra di Meridos, fonti certe affermano che in realtà non si estinsero a causa della battaglia, quanto per il fatto che, nella foga della mischia, nessuno riusciva a vederli e venivano continuamente calpestati dai giganti. Il Boschetto rimaneva comunque una delle più grandi difese mai erette su tutta Meridos, un bosco incantato che fa perdere l’orientamento a chiunque abbia il coraggio di entrarvi; l’unico modo per orientarsi, una volta avventuratisi, è utilizzare una delle mappe magiche degli scribacchini di Mauritius, la capitale di Meridos e sede imperiale. Il team della “Fenice”, la squadra di Connor, ne possedeva una. Il fatto che si siano persi è soltanto routine.
«Connor, davvero, non trovo concepibile che siamo riusciti a perderci nonostante avessimo comprato pure la dannatissima mappa.» Siska tirò un sospiro poi riprese «è davvero possibile? Ogni volta è la stessa storia, come ti è venuto in mente di utilizzare l’unica guida che avevamo per incartare il fritto misto per pranzo? Come hai potuto non accorgerti che stavi utilizzando la mappa come carta assorbente? L’avevo ottenuta utilizzando tutti i miei risparmi e l’avevo fatta addirittura portare col corriere magico Babazon.» Il resto del gruppo non si espresse subito, Rennon con fare disperato si avvicinò allo zaino delle provviste, lo aprì e controllò il contenuto.
«Insetticida, mangime per pesci, un badile, veleno, due patate, un pettine, quattro fettine di mucchino di Stercovalle e… santi dei, ma cosa diavolo è questa cosa viscida? Si muove.» tirò fuori la mano dallo zaino ricoperta di bava di lumaca del fango. «Ragazzi abbiamo finito le provviste, l’unica cosa commestibile sono le due patate e Connor e la cosa peggiore è che non possiamo nemmeno tornare indietro, rischiamo di morire di fame nel migliore dei casi.» Utrax non aveva ancora aperto bocca, si girò verso Connor, guardò dentro lo zaino, si rigirò verso Connor con lo sguardo di chi non ha più nulla da perdere.
«Beh, Conny, sei commestibile? Secondo me la tua carne è molto più tenera e saporita di quella della Dracotigre per cui siamo venuti qui.» Mentre la squadra lo stava insultando, Connor rimase in silenzio con un lugubre sorrisino stampato sul viso, poi, si schiarì la voce e prese parola.
«Ragazzi…ragazzi, calmatevi su, alla fine siamo riusciti, grazie all’anziano signore, a trovare la via e uscire dal bosco no!?»
Alle parole, Siska, si voltò di scatto con occhi di fuoco «Mille Mauritius ci è costata l’informazione dell’anziano signore razza di babbeo!»
Mentre Utrax e Siska stavano seviziando Connor passando anche alle botte, Renn si mise ad osservare l’entrata della caverna. Le montagne della furia si ergono non troppo lontano da Falflin l’ex capitale degli elfi-nani, le pendici non sono molto ripide e sono facilmente scalabili, l’unico motivo per la quale nessuno si avvicina mai alle montagne sono le strane leggende che circolano su questo luogo: storie che narrano di mitiche creature, le Dracotigri, rappresentate nei libri come enormi felini quadrupedi con ali di drago in grado di sputare fuoco. La loro pelliccia è di color verde smeraldo attraversata da striature bianche. La loro lingua biforcuta è in grado di emettere un acido letale per qualsiasi essere vivente, insomma, stando alle informazioni riportate, un temibile nemico anche per i più esperti degli esploratori. Il giovane mago guardò a terra dopo essersi soffermato per un po’ sull’immensa cavità che si apriva di fronte a lui, nessun’ impronta, nessun rumore proveniente dalla bocca della caverna, un buon segnò penso Rennon. Fece per voltarsi verso gli altri che avevano finalmente lasciato Conny libero.
«Sentito qualcosa Ren? Dovremmo mandare una delle tue pallette a controllare prima.»
«Niente di niente, nessun rumore, nessuna impronta, penso che nessuno si avvicini a questa grotta da diverso tempo, stiamo comunque attenti, potrebbe essere rischioso.»
Detto questo disegnò sul palmo della mano una runa, strinse il pugno, riaprì la mano e dal sigillo che si era appena formato fuoriuscì una piccola pallina luminosa che Rennon lanciò all’interno della caverna. La piccola sfera vorticò per qualche istante, poi si fermò a mezz’aria e sparì all’interno della caverna. Passato qualche minuto la creazione del mago tornò indietro, si depositò sul palmo della sua mano e scomparve in un piccolo bagliore.
«Via libera, per il momento sembra che non ci sia traccia di grandi creature, solo piccoli esseri. Potremmo addentrarci nella caverna e aspettare il ritorno della bestia: ucciderla sarà più semplice tendendole un agguato.»
Il gruppo annuì, Rennon non solo era il mago del gruppo ma era di sicuro il più intelligente di tutti quando si trattava di strategie. Nonostante questa sembrasse la migliore delle ipotesi per cacciare la famigerata bestia, qualcosa sembrava preoccupare Connor.
«Cosa ti turba Conny?» disse Siska mentre si stavano addentrando nell’antro.
«Niente Siska, ho solo un terribile presentimento, come se ci stessimo dimenticando qualcosa, come se avessimo lasciato indietro una piccola tessera del puzzle.»
Siska rimase impalata un istnate, alzò un ciglio, guardò il giovane cuoco e si avvio senza badare alle sue parole.
Cominciarono a scendere, la caverna si faceva sempre più ripida, l’unica fonte di luce erano le torce magiche create da Rennon e la luce riflessa dai cristalli nella caverna. Dopo diversi minuti di discesa arrivarono in un ampio spazio che non sembrava avere vie se non quella da cui erano arrivati.
«Dovremmo esserci.» Sussurrò Rennon. Dopo di che, dai palmi delle sue mani cominciarono ad uscire piccole fiammelle che si sparsero per tutta la cavità.
«Dobbiamo sistemarci qui e attendere l’arrivo della bestia, Conny cosa dice il libro?»
«Il libro dice che la Dracotigre solitamente torna nella sua tana al calare del sole…non dovrebbe metterci molto.»
In quel momento, proprio mentre Conny stava finendo di parlare, un rumore sordo rimbombò nella caverna, Rennon spense subito tutte le fiammelle con un rapido gesto della mano.
Qualcosa entrò nella caverna.
Silenzio.
Tutti si posizionarono dietro ad alcune rocce aspettando il momento propizio per ingaggiare battaglia.
Un rumore di ali rimbombò nella caverna, poi…un tonfo sordo.
«Ahia!»
Era Conny, Ren si alzò in piedi di colpo, fece scaturire nuovamente le fiammelle che tornarono ad illuminare l’ambiente. Siska aveva già messo mano al suo arco, Utrax alla sacra spada Antares.
Quando la luce riuscì finalmente a mostrare anche Connor, i compagni videro qualcosa stretto fra le sue mani: era una creatura simile ad un gatto, color verde vomito, con una lunga lingua biforcuta e sulla schiena due minuscole alette. Conny si stava massaggiando la testa, ma nessuno sembrava badare davvero a lui.
«Mi è piombato in testa ragazzi, cosa accidenti è?!»
Tirò fuori il libricino delle leggende che teneva sempre con sé in un sacchetto legato alla cintura, lo sfogliò brevemente, arrivò alle pagine del Dracotigre, guardò il volumetto, poi l’animale, poi di nuovo il volumetto, non c’erano dubbi, era proprio una Dracotigre.
In quel momento la bestia, che nel frattempo Conny aveva lasciato libera a terra, cominciò ad emettere dei tremendi suoni gutturali.
«Tutti via! Allontanatevi, tutti, potrebbe essere pericolos…»
Dopo alcuni istanti di convulsioni strazianti la creatura cominciò a vomitare palle di pelo che scoppiettarono un po’, dopo di che emisero un filo di fumo, presero fuoco e bruciarono in una manciata di secondi.
Nella caverna era calato il silenzio, Rennon guardava incredulo la scena, Siska guardava incredula Conny, Utrax guardava incredulo Conny, Conny si stava massaggiando la testa dove il felino in volo aveva sbattuto, con una mano, con l’altra ripose il libretto, e si mise a accarezzare il felino.
«Non è forse stupenda, la natura?» disse guardando in alto, nel vuoto, con un sorriso fin troppo serio per la situazione.
«NO RAZZA DI IDIOTA!!!» risposero i compagni in coro.
«Dove diavolo hai comprato quel bestiario di Ern, Conny?» gridò Utrax in preda ad una crisi a metà strada tra fame e disperazione.
«Me l’ha venduto un tale commerciante che passava per Saith, diceva che era uno dei bestiari perduti e che valeva una fortuna. Ora capisco perché non mi ha fatto la ricevuta quando ho pagato.»
«E quanto lo hai pagato Conny?» sospirò Siska in lacrime mentre cercava un punto per azzannare il felino vivo che nel frattempo si era fatto spazio sullo zaino di Utrax gettato lì a fianco.
«Beh, forse…» fece una pausa «forse duemila Mauritius.»
«Basta lo ammazzo!» Utrax schioccò le ossa delle dita e con la disperazione in volto fece per buttarsi su Conny che si rifugiò dietro le spalle di Ren.
Il mago, che fino a quel momento era stato in silenzio disse
«Certo è, che da questo gatto non possiamo tirarci fuori neanche una fettina, non ci resta che mangiare ancora quel dannato cibo in pergamena.»
«Per fortuna abbiamo le patate e le fettine di mucchino!» Esclamò Conny e fece per prendere lo zaino dalle spalle; in quel momento, in quel preciso momento, Connor ripensò alla precedente conversazione avuta con Siska, il pezzo del puzzle che mancava, qualcosa di lasciato indietro e cominciò a collegare tutti i pezzi.
Aveva lasciato lo zaino magico con le ultime provviste all’esterno della caverna.
Un secondo.
Solo un secondo per realizzare tutto ciò.
Conny girò lo sguardo verso Siska.
Siska si lanciò su di lui, e il giovane cuoco fece per proteggersi quando un boato rintronò la caverna, i quattro si girarono verso l’ingresso e fu allora che nei loro piccoli cervelli da gallina balenò il pensiero che probabilmente quello che Conny stava teneramente accarezzando fosse soltanto un cucciolo della bestia leggendaria. Nonostante ciò Conny tirò un sospiro di sollievo, probabilmente la rabbia di Siska sarebbe stata più difficile da gestire. Il primo a muoversi fu Ren e probabilmente fu anche colui che vide seriamente la minaccia che si stava parando di fronte a loro.
«Ragazzi dobbiamo andarcene…» disse «e in fretta, mamma gattona non sembra molto felice di vederci.»
Molto lentamente gli eroi cominciarono a muoversi verso l’uscita della caverna, la dracotigre non sembrava però interessarsi molto a loro ma sembrava attratta più dal suo cucciolo. A chiudere la fila era Conny, rimasto indietro rispetto agli altri e seguito a ruota dal piccolo cucciolo che stava miagolando strofinandosi alle gambe del cuoco che, invece, tentava di non guardarlo per non essere contagiato dalle carinerie dell’animale. Il piano di Rennon stava funzionando in maniera egregia, le Dracotigri femmine non sono troppo pericolose sono soltanto molto protettive nei confronti dei loro piccoli a quanto riportava il manuale. Ad un tratto, proprio mentre la fine del tunnel che portava all’uscita era vicina si udì un forte boato provenire dalle loro spalle, tutti si girarono, Connor era scomparso, o meglio, lo videro correre a gran velocità dall’interno della caverna con il cucciolo teneramente appollaiato sulla sua testa. Mentre gli altri cominciarono a correre a gran velocità, il cuoco, alle loro spalle, continuava a gridare:
«era troppo carino, non potevo lasciarlo tutto solo!»
Gli altri non risposero, si limitarono ad incenerirlo con lo sguardo e a continuare a correre.
La Dracotigre infuriava dietro di loro ma le dimensioni del tunnel le impedivano agili movimenti, fu allora che qualcosa balenò in testa a Rennon che si arrestò di colpo: uccidere la bestia era impossibile data la sua grandezza davvero fuori misura rispetto a quella di un umano. Decise allora di adottare una strategia differente e di bloccare la bestia all’interno della sua stessa tana. Tirò fuori dalla borsetta che portava al fianco un rotolo, lo srotolò in tutta fretta e incise sopra di esso una runa magica: la runa del collasso, capace di generare onde sismiche che si propagano attraverso il terreno. Agilmente si spostò verso l’ingresso della tana, attivò il sigillo e poggiò a terra la pergamena srotolata. Intanto dalla bocca della creatura cominciava ad uscire del fumo, fumo che sembrava ben più minaccioso di quello uscito poco prima dal vomitevole rigetto di pelo del cucciolo. Fu nel momento in cui Connor attraversò la caverna che la runa si attivò: una potente scossa di terremoto fece vibrare il terreno, dalla foresta alle loro spalle si alzò uno stormo di uccelli spaventati dalle scosse, le pareti della caverna non resistettero alla magnitudo e cominciarono a crollare di fronte alla bestia che rimase intrappolata all’interno del suo stesso rifugio. Le scosse si arrestarono. I quattro erano poggiati sulle ginocchia con il fiatone, Rennon era ancora più stanco rispetto agli altri tre in quanto la velocità di esecuzione dell’incantesimo era costata molte energie al mago. Connor, intanto, era girato verso il suo zaino che era rimasto lì fuori per tutto il tempo, si girò con la creaturina ancora ancorata alla sua testa e disse:
«Ragazzi, ho una bella notizia e una cattiva: la brutta notizia è che probabilmente qualche bestia si è mangiata le nostre ultime 4 fettine di mucchino di Stercovalle e le patate che ci eravamo procurati con tanti sacrifici e a caro prezzo…» in realtà a sborsare i soldi erano stati soltanto gli altri «… la bella notizia è che abbiamo un nuovo compagno di avventure, Vomitino» e indicò la vile creatura che miagolò.
Gli altri si guardarono fra di loro, ora, la Dracotigre, non faceva poi così tanta paura rispetto ai loro sguardi truci: senza mappa, senza cibo, con una bocca, se pur piccola, in più da sfamare. I gestori della “Fenice”, la più importante taverna di Saith, nonché l’unica, tornarono in paese alcuni giorni dopo. I cittadini che li videro entrare in città rimasero sbigottiti, scavati dalla fame e dalla sete (avevano finito il cibo in pergamena solo dopo un giorno), con lo sguardo basso ma soprattutto con il cuoco della brigata legato a testa in giù ad un palo che chiedeva aiuto; come se tutto fosse normale, i cittadini, non badarono troppo a cosa stava accadendo, e in effetti questa è routine per quel mal assortito gruppo di locandieri.
