Qualche giorno prima, David Bowie aveva compiuto un grande passo nel mondo musicale, pubblicando un singolo intitolato Space Oddity. Unico brano dell’omonimo album a non essere prodotto dal fedele Tony Visconti, ma da Gus Dudgeon. Caso vuole che quest’ultimo sarà, tre anni dopo, il produttore di un altro capolavoro con la stessa tematica: Rocket Man, tratto dall’album Honky Château di Elton John.
David ed Elton, o forse sarebbe meglio dire Reginald, da adolescenti erano soliti ritrovarsi nei café di Soho per parlare di musica. Non è difficile immaginare come due personalità così flamboyant possano aver subito trovato l’intesa. Successivamente però il loro rapporto si incrinò: stando a quanto racconta il baronetto, durante una delle tante serate trascorse in giro per i gay club londinesi, Bowie lo insultò chiamandolo “token queen” (appellativo dispregiativo nel mondo omosessuale); al contrario Angela Bowie insinuò che il marito non avesse preso bene l’uscita di Rocket Man, che considerava una “scopiazzatura” della sua hit.
Con grandi successi alle spalle come Your Song e Tiny Dancer, dubitiamo del fatto che il signor John abbia avuto la necessità di plagiare l’amico. Dopotutto, in un momento storico di fervente attività scientifica, con il quinto allunaggio dell’Apollo 16 alle porte, era difficile non lasciarsi ispirare dalla misteriosità dell’Universo, così come porsi dei quesiti circa il futuro dell’umanità.

Già nel 1951 Ray Bradbury aveva scritto un breve racconto intitolato “Rocket Man”: un padre astronauta spiega al figlio come nel momento in cui si trova nella navicella senta la nostalgia di casa, ma una volta a casa desideri tornare nello spazio.
Bernie Taupin, già paroliere di Elton, fu catturato da questo concetto e lo usò per un nuovo brano. Riflettendo su come questa professione potesse diventare ordinaria in futuro, scrisse la strofa di apertura. Una moglie per l’ennesima volta si trova a preparare le valige al marito in partenza. Si tratta però di un uomo comune, non di uno studioso, che candidamente ammette “all this science I don’t understand” poiché svolge questa mansione semplicemente per sopravvivere. La melodia, creata da Elton John in pochi minuti, sa enfatizzare le immagini evocative del testo. Si inizia con un semplice sottofondo di pianoforte, al quale si aggiungono cori celestiali e slide guitar ascendenti che ci donano la sensazione di fluttuare nello spazio.

“Burning out his fuse up here alone” rappresenta poi quella sensazione di solitudine che attanaglia l’astronauta ma, a ben pensarci, anche il musicista in tour. Intrappolato in un vortice di concerti e mondanità, che lo tiene lontano dagli affetti, spesso perde la percezione della bellezza che lo circonda. La mancanza di umiltà è pertanto un vizio di cui molti sono vittima, Sir Elton John incluso. Noto è l’atteggiamento supponente durante l’ascesa della sua carriera, direttamente proporzionale alla sua discesa negli inferi della dipendenza, che raggiunse il culmine nel 1975 con un’overdose che per poco non lo uccise. Ecco perché il verso “and I’m gonna be high as a kite“, letteralmente “volare in alto come un aquilone”, in questo contesto metaforico può essere letto secondo l’uso gergale “essere strafatto”.
«Ho sempre detto che la cocaina è stata la droga che mi ha fatto aprire. Mi permetteva di parlare con le persone. Ma poi è diventata la droga che mi ha chiuso in me stesso. Le ultime due settimana in cui ne ho fatto uso le ho trascorse in una stanza a Londra, senza uscire mai.»
