Ed eccolo che arriva, con il suo suono di campanellini e l’effetto delle lucine ad intermittenza, il Natale anche quest’anno. E come da lunghissima tradizione porta con sé una carrellata di film che, chi più chi meno, sono ormai entrati nel cuore del pubblico.
Mettetevi comodi perché, come sempre, vi offriamo non una ma BEN DUE classifiche di quelli che consideriamo i nostri film di film di Natale preferiti e vi consigliamo di guardare per rallegrare e gustarvi al meglio queste feste.
Tralasciando spesso quel concetto ormai stantio di “Natale = buoni sentimenti”. Fidatevi: ce n’è per tutti i gusti.
Top 10 dei film di Natale di Duccio
10) Love Actually- L’amore davvero (R. Curtis, GBR, USA, 2003)
Ad aprire la classifica troviamo la tenera commedia romantica scritta e diretta da Richard Curtis, che raduna un cast di stelle del cinema britannico con l’obiettivo quanto mai singolare di provare la tesi del brano “Love is all around”, secondo cui l’amore esiste ed è dappertutto.
Il film di Curtis, partendo quasi come uno sceneggiato televisivo, narra dieci storie d’amore che, intrecciandosi fra loro, condividono l’ambientazione nel periodo natalizio. Questo perché il Natale è in fin dei conti, che lo si voglia o meno, il periodo dei buoni sentimenti e spesso si rivela come un pretesto per produrre film tutti uguali fra loro, che siano commediole mediocri e poco divertenti, drammi inconsistenti o veri e propri lacrima-movie forzati con l’unico fine di piangersi addosso.
E poi c’è Love Actually, una piacevolissima voce fuori dal coro che riesce a divertire genuinamente lo spettatore, grazie ad un fantastico English Humour, la recitazione convincente del cast e una scrittura intelligente. Curtis aggiunge quella giusta dose di cattiveria che fa di Love Actually un cult da vedere e rivedere. Menzione d’onore per Martin Freeman, ai tempi quasi sconosciuto, che interpreta una controfigura di scene di sesso nei film, il quale si innamora di una collega.
9) Edward mani di forbice (T. Burton, USA, 1990)
Quasi 30 anni per uno dei migliori film di Burton, con il quale ha consolidato il suo stile e si è riaffermato fuori dalle major, dopo essersi temporaneamente allontanato dalla Warner Bros. in seguito al successo di Batman (tornerà poi per il seguito ma alle sue condizioni, parlavamo già di Batman qui link top 10 cinecomic). In “Edward Scissorhands” si ravvisano tutti i temi e aspetti più cari al regista di Burbank, che da qui in poi inizierà anche la sua lunga collaborazione con Johnny Depp.
La storia è quella di Edward, ragazzo artificiale e taciturno con delle lame al posto delle mani, che si ritrova catapultato in una “Anytown”, stereotipo di una cittadina di provincia americana tanto colorata quanto anonima. Edward dovrà in breve tempo imparare a convivere con le persone, tra pregiudizi sul suo aspetto e apprezzamenti per il suo talento nell’utilizzo delle lame. La pellicola, pur non essendo natalizia in senso stretto, vede il culmine della vicenda svolgersi proprio durante il periodo delle feste. Inoltre Burton riuscendo a coniugare in maniera efficace temi come l’amore, l’amicizia e l’incapacità di comunicarli in questa fiaba dark, mette in scena quello che è a tutti gli effetti un film sul Natale di grande effetto.
8) Nightmare Before Christmas (H. Selick, USA, 1993)
Ancora una volta un’idea di Burton, portata sul grande schermo dall’amico e collega Henry Selick. Burton, qui produttore e doppiatore, ebbe l’illuminazione quando vide un negoziante rimuovere le decorazioni di Halloween per far posto a quelle di Natale. Nasce così la storia di Jack Skeletron, cittadino modello del mondo spaventoso di Halloween, che decide di rapire Babbo Natale e festeggiare il Natale “a modo suo”. Ciò porterà il caos nel mondo e sarà compito di Sally, una bambola coperta di stracci segretamente innamorata di Jack, riportare alla ragione lo scheletro.
Il cult di Selick non è soltanto unico nel suo genere, essendo allo stesso tempo sia un film di Halloween sia uno di Natale, ma è diventata una vera e propria icona Pop, basti pensare che la storia d’amore fra Jack e Sally viene menzionata in “I Miss You” dei Blink-182 e il videoclip ne è pressoché una rivisitazione in live-action.
Nightmare Before Christmas fu uno dei primi lungometraggi realizzati interamente in stop-motion, ed è ancora oggi uno dei migliori prodotti d’animazione a passo uno insieme a Wallace & Gromit, il quale però vede l’utilizzo di pupazzi di plastilina.
7) Babbo bastardo (T. Zwigoff, USA, DEU, 2003)
Altro classico natalizio che ebbe grande successo all’epoca d’uscita, “Bad Santa” è un film cinico, scorretto, cattivo, spietato, irriverente, dissacrante, sboccato da (assolutamente non) vedere con tutta la famiglia. Billy Bob Thornton rappresenta il cuore, ovviamente nero come la pece di questa volgarissima commedia ed infatti offre una performance incredibile nei panni di Willie, ladro di professione e svogliato Babbo Natale di un grande magazzino. Aiutato dal suo fedele elfo Marcus, un collega nano, Willie compie ogni anno un unico grande colpo proprio nella notte di Natale, ma nel corso del film conoscerà un bambino e una ragazza che gli insegneranno ad essere… Un po’ meno cattivo.
“Bad Santa” uscì qualche mese dopo il divorzio con Angelina Jolie e Thornton mise
nel suo personaggio tutto l’odio e l’acidità del mondo, che in fin dei conti sono più che
comprensibili se non riesci a far funzionare il matrimonio con la donna più bella del mondo.
Occorre sottolineare che la volgarità di questo Babbo bastardo non è come quella di un cinepanettone: Innanzitutto perché il film di Zwigoff un abbozzo di trama ce l’ha e non è
assolutamente un delirio trash. In secondo luogo perché è volutamente dissacrante e anticonformistico. In terzo luogo perché la stessa volgarità trova giustificazione nel personaggio di un odioso ed egocentrico criminale alcolizzato.
6) In Bruges (M. McDonagh, GBR, USA, 2008)
Nel 2008 esce In Bruges, primo lungometraggio di Martin McDonagh, a metà strada tra il Noir e la Black Comedy. La vicenda narrata è quella dei sicari Ray e Ken, due strepitosi Colin Farrell e Brendan Gleeson, che vengono spediti dal loro capo, un Ralph Fiennes sempre sul pezzo, a Bruges, dopo che il loro ultimo incarico è andato male. In attesa di nuovi ordini i due devono decidere come trascorrere il tempo nella città belga: il primo è divorato dai sensi di colpa e vede Bruges come un purgatorio cupo e vuoto, il secondo è invece propenso a passare una tranquilla vacanza, affascinato da un paesaggio romantico che sembra rimasto incastonato nel tempo.
È interessante notare come McDonagh si focalizzi sul valore della vita in contrasto con la morte prendendo in esame dei sicari, solitamente ritratti come privi di scrupoli e coscienza. E ci riesce con una sceneggiatura solida, una regia molto moderna ed uno stile del tutto singolare, per quanto riconducibile ad altri registi in diverse scene. Il ritmo va in crescendo e, anche qui, il climax della storia è a Natale. In Bruges è sotto ogni aspetto un film fantastico, che sa divertire ed emozionare sinceramente, e mette in luce un’idea di cinema coraggiosa visto il tono fortemente agrodolce.
5) Gremlins (J. Dante, USA, 1984)
Joe Dante è uno di quei registi “tuttofare” dai quali Hollywood con il tempo ha preso sempre più le distanze, ma che in realtà meriterebbero di essere riscoperti.
Gremlins, oltre che il suo più grande successo commerciale, rappresenta la quintessenza del suo modo di fare cinema. Partendo dal cinema di serie B, infatti, Dante è approdato tra gli autori di serie A grazie a questo fantasy-horror natalizio, e grazie anche a Spielberg che lo appoggiò nei conflitti con la Warner.
La storia è semplice: un padre di famiglia, inventore di professione, trova uno strano animaletto in un negozio cinese e decide di comprarlo come regalo di Natale per il figlio. Il padrone si rifiuta di venderlo in quanto pericoloso, ma il figlio lo cede di nascosto, non prima di aver dato all’inventore tre regole fondamentali: non esporlo alla luce, non bagnarlo e non dargli da mangiare dopo la mezzanotte.
Chiaramente, i comandi verranno trasgrediti ed un esercito di mostriciattoli terrificanti seminerà il panico in città nella notte di Natale.
Gremlins è un film geniale per come vengono mescolati elementi tipici della commedia per famiglie, del fantasy e dell’horror e per l’uso sapiente degli effetti speciali analogici (i pupazzetti dei mostri per dirla breve) che hanno influenzato tantissimi film di genere a seguire. La regia è notevole, merito del fatto di avere a disposizione per la prima
volta un ampio budget e Dante ne approfitta per prendere in giro l’ipocrisia della società americana e smontare il mito del bianco Natale sereno e gioioso da passare in famiglia. Senza dubbio uno dei film più divertenti e intriganti da vedere e rivedere a Natale.
4) Smoke (W. Wang, USA, DEU, 1995)
Un film indipendente straordinario nel suo essere totalmente ordinario, Smoke segue le
vicissitudini di Auggie Wren, proprietario di un negozio di sigari a Brooklyn, e di alcuni suoi clienti abituali, fra cui Paul Benjamin, uno scrittore in crisi che soffre per la morte della moglie incinta.
Un giorno, recandosi da Auggie, Paul viene quasi investito da un autobus. Viene salvato
da Rashid, un giovane senza casa e senza nessuno al mondo, che Paul decide quindi di ospitare in casa sua. Tutti hanno perso qualcuno o si portano appresso un fardello con cui devono convivere. Bellissima la sceneggiatura di Paul Auster, che si basa sul suo “Il racconto di Natale di Auggie Wren” e su altri racconti dello stesso Auster.
Quello di Wayne Wang è un film eccezionale: dalle interpretazioni toccanti di Harvey Keitel e William Hurt nei ruoli di Auggie e Paul, alla regia moderna che si avvale dell’uso di macchina a mano, fino alla colonna sonora perfetta in cui spicca “Innocent when you dream” di Tom Waits.
Il “fumo” del titolo diventa un pretesto per narrare storie, il negozio di sigari un punto di incontro fra persone semplici che hanno tanto da dire e che hanno bisogno di comunicare. Si ride ma soprattutto si riflette sul valore degli amici, degli affetti, del dialogo. Ed è anche un film di Natale unico, poiché nel racconto finale di Auggie Wren, dove lo storytelling raggiunge il suo picco massimo, il messaggio essenziale è quanto sia importante offrire del calore umano ad una persona sola.
3) Una poltrona per due (J. Landis, USA, 1983)
In Italia è il classico di Natale per antonomasia, venendo trasmesso su Italia 1 regolarmente la sera della Vigilia dal ’97, è praticamente inutile anche ricordare di cosa parla. La commedia goliardica di Landis, in realtà, non ha niente di natalizio se non l’ambientazione, tanto che è una tradizione della vigilia solamente in Italia. Ma il film è comunque notevole, dissacrante quanto basta con battute da antologia in pieno stile Landis, il quale non rinuncia nemmeno a fare una critica, per niente velata, al mondo del business. Tanto quanto i colleghi della sua generazione, Landis si diverte a schernire l’americano benestante medio e fa riflettere lo spettatore su quanto sia fondamentale, alla resa dei conti, nascere povero o nascere ricco. Chi dice che non ruberebbe mai non è mai stato messo in condizione da poter scegliere se farlo o meno.
Al di là della critica interessante che viene fatta, Una poltrona per due rimane un film esilarante, con un Eddie Murphy al massimo della sua comicità ed una spaziale Jamie Lee Curtis, senza dimenticare il buon Dan Aykroid. Si tratta di un film bellissimo perché, come diceva un amico: “Scherzando si può dire tutto, anche la verità.”
2) La vita è meravigliosa (F. Capra, USA, 1946)
Più che essere uno dei più bei film natalizi di sempre, sarebbe corretto dire che “It’s a Wonderful Life” di Frank Capra sia uno dei film in generale più importanti nella storia del cinema statunitense.
Pur rivelandosi un flop al botteghino, la pellicola di Capra acquisì fin da subito lo status di cult visto il grande successo riscosso fra la critica. La trama ruota attorno a George Bailey, un immenso James Stewart, che dopo aver rinunciato per tutta la vita a realizzare i suoi sogni pur di aiutare il prossimo, si trova sul punto di suicidarsi nella notte di Natale.
Interviene a questo punto l’angelo Clarence, con l’aspetto di un simpatico vecchietto, che gli mostrerà come sarebbe stata la vita delle persone aiutate da George se questi non fosse mai nato. Il film è un capolavoro immane del cinema americano, la recitazione di Stewart ha fatto scuola così come la tecnica di Capra, per non parlare dell’idea originalissima di mostrare una “versione alternativa” del mondo corrotta, idea ripresa pari pari da Zemeckis in Ritorno al futuro.
I rimandi a Dickens sono evidenti e il film scorre benissimo seguendo passo dopo passo la vita di George fino a quel fatidico momento sul ponte. La vita è meravigliosa è un film sulle persone, fatto per le persone, uno splendido ritratto di umanità che riesce ancora a commuovere in maniera del tutto naturale dopo più di 70 anni, qualunque sia l’età del pubblico. Un’opera imperdibile.
1) Die Hard – Trappola di cristallo (J. McTiernan, USA, 1988)
Per quanto tutti i film finora proposti siano assolutamente validi, ce n’è uno che più di tutti, e con mezzi totalmente anticonvenzionali, si è rivelato essere il miglior film di Natale. Ne parlavo giusto un anno fa.

Top 10 dei film di Natale di Yur Brynner
10) Joyeux Noël- Una verità dimenticata dalla storia (C. Carion, FRA, DEU, GBR, BEL, ROU, 2005)
Tratto dalla tregua di Natale sul fronte franco-tedesco nel ’14, fatto storico di cui vi abbiamo già parlato, questo film pare avere tutte le carte in regola per essere tacciato come la classica rivisitazione romanzata e addolcita che troppo spesso (mi) rende un film indigesto.
I pochi minuti di guerra non rendono abbastanza l’esasperazione in cui i soldati si ritrovano contro ogni volontà, spaesati da quell’evento mondiale che non aveva mai avuto antesignani per gravosità e dimensioni. Ma gli abili tocchi di brutalità e le critiche a Chiesa ed alte gerarchie militari dell’epoca, che per tutta la durata della Grande Guerra si tennero ben lontani dai campi di battaglia, tiranneggiando le truppe ed ignorando i loro problemi, riportano alla pellicola un giusto tono, evitando di far cadere ogni cosa in una sorta di triste, banale e trita favola.
9) Ogni maledetto Natale (G. Ciarrapico, M. Torre, L. Vendruscolo, ITA, 2014)
Mai mi sarei immaginato di consigliare un film con Alessandro Cattelan, oltretutto uno in cui si porta a letto Alessandra Mastronardi. C’è però una componente capace di sovrastare il lieve senso di fastidio nato da quanto sopra scritto: gli autori e registi del film sono gli stessi della serie cult “Boris”, i quali hanno avuto la brillante idea di portarsi dietro quasi l’intero cast.
La storia pare la più banale e sentita, ormai classico canovaccio per commedie di dubbio gusto, ovvero il confronto fra le famiglie di due giovani innamorati, così diverse a causa dei loro ceti di appartenenza (alto borghese l’una, con la puzza sotto al naso e atteggiamenti snob, umile e caciarona l’altra) ma qui non si fanno preferenze come un Vanzina qualsiasi, che patteggerà sempre per i meno abbienti, come se compensassero con la genuinità ciò che manca loro in cultura e ricchezza. Si rivelano (e si attaccano con una satira gustosamente esagerata) quante somiglianze ci siano fra tutte le famiglie, in particolare sull’insopportabilità propria di ognuna di esse.
Se siete fra coloro che tanto hanno amato e condiviso la riflessione di Giallini in Perfetti sconosciuti sul “vincitore in una coppia” preparatevi a sentirlo qua riguardo ad un certo “pupazzetto”.
8) Krampus- Natale non è sempre Natale (M. Dougherty, USA, 2015)
Un erede spirituale e stilistico di Gremlins: la famiglia del piccolo Max rappresenta, con una perdonabile sovrabbondanza di cliché e luoghi comuni, la società consumista non solo statunitense ma anche occidentale tutta, che non si limita a dissipare in termini economici ma arriva anche a toccare e trasfigurare tradizioni che basano le loro origini nei meandri più reconditi della storia di ogni popolazione.
Così, il lungo cammino che ha visto il culmine quando la più grossa e potente compagnia internazionale ha trasformato nel proprio bonario volto quello che in passato era una figura folkloristica basata sul concetto di giusta punizione o ricompensa, che portava forse più terrore che gioia ai bambini del Nord Europa (è che era già stato “rubato” e inglobato dal cristianesimo) può vedere nella trama di questo futuro classico per famiglie, una vendetta di un rito e tradizione impersonati da una figura ormai caduta nel dimenticatoio per la maggior parte del pubblico di massa.
Le creature realizzate in analogico riescono a dare concretezza e tangibilità ai grotteschi pericoli a cui i nostri eroi, coi quali sarà davvero difficile empatizzare, dovranno sopravvivere. E la scelta di non mostrare mai il principale antagonista va a non infrangere quell’affascinante senso di mistero e terrore che lo avvolge anche nelle scene più movimentate.
7) Ginger e Fred (F. Fellini, ITA, DDR, 1986)
Non so come funzioni da voi ma per il sottoscritto Natale è un giorno da passare in casa, propria o dei parenti, al riparo dal freddo ma ad affrontare le innumerevoli e abnormi portate del pranzo. Dopo di che ci si gode il meritato riposo del guerriero con i piedi rivolti al caminetto e la tv accesa per fare un po’ di rumore, con l’ennesimo programma spazzatura appositamente pensato per le feste, dal palinsesto di dubbio gusto.
È proprio in questo oscuro mondo di paillette e riflettori che il più Grande del cinema italiano ambienta questa storia e il Natale stesso non è altro che un semplice componente di questo setting.
Al tempo stesso è anche un ottima scusa per inserire in questa classifica un lavoro ingiustamente bistrattato che si rivela un’analisi sulla senilità, con i bellissimi Mastroianni e Masina che riflettono sulla loro vita passata e cercano di scappare dal caotico mondo catodico in cui si sono cacciati ignorando a quali scempiaggini ed indecenze sarebbero andati incontro. Una giocosa e al contempo feroce critica ad uno dei più effimeri sistemi mai inventati dall’uomo.
6) S.O.S fantasmi (R. Donner, USA, 1988)
Mi ero ripromesso di non aggiungere più di una versione del celebre libro di Dickens, di certo il più abusato fra tutti i classici della letteratura che vanta credo un numero quasi incalcolabile di adattamenti/parodie/rivisitazioni. Ma già mi ero castigato per non aver inserito nella precedente top 10 (inserire link a top 10 cantattori) la grandiosa interpretazione di David Johansen nei panni del fantasma dei Natali passati.
Una pura e gustosa commedia anni ’80 che tartassa quel mondo edonista nel quale è ambientata e dove si ribadisce che ormai “il Natale non è una festa religiosa” ma il miglior periodo dell’anno per battere cassa.
Ritmo e trovate dissacranti, come il fatto che gli spettri si presentino a Bill Murray (uno Scrooge che per quanto stronzo è impossibile da odiare) a mezzogiorno e non a mezzanotte. Il gusto per il macabro non manca ma come tradizione vuole è presente il più tipico dei finali basato su tenerezza e redenzione.
Anche qui tanto di cappello agli effetti e trucchi analogici.
5) A Christmas Carol (R. Zemeckis, USA, 2009)
Ricordo ancora quando vidi per la prima volta Il Canto di Natale di Topolino e quanto rimasi sconvolto dopo aver letto il romanzo originale: la più iconica storia sulla festa dell’amore e dei buoni sentimenti era colma di oscurità, cattiverie e brutalità. E quando vidi ciò che Zemeckis riuscì a portare sullo schermo fui ripagato appieno. Oltre ai colori, le parti dolci e festose e il talento di un gruppo d’attori come poche volte si riesce a radunare per film d’animazione (un Jim Carrey che si fa letteralmente in 4 interpretando Scrooge e i fantasmi dei Natali e Gary Oldman una spanna sopra tutti) non mancano quei toni cupi, dialoghi di accuse senza mezzi termini e immagini lugubri che hanno in effetti caratterizzato la produzione dello scrittore vittoriano.
La sceneggiatura è quanto di più fedele possa esistere al testo originario, senza aggiungere ne tralasciare nulla: il regista però ci mette tutto del suo nella parte visiva riuscendo finalmente, dopo i due imbarazzanti lungometraggi precedenti, a trovare il giusto equilibrio per la sua performance capture che lascia massima libertà al cast e non rende troppo macchinose le espressioni facciali, aiutata dal forte tratto caricaturale che questi sembrano avere. E dopo la trilogia di Ritorno al futuro il nostro si può sbizzarrire con innovativi viaggi nel tempo (e nello spazio) supportato dalla CGI, usata poche volte in maniera così appropriata.
4) Tokyo Godfather (S. Kon, S.Furuya, JPN, 2003)
Ispirato ad un western di John Ford, tra i film preferiti di Kon, tre barboni (un ubriacone, un trans e una giovane ladruncola) trovano un bebè abbandonato fra i rifiuti e decidono di rintracciare i genitori seguendo un’esile serie d’indizi.
Pellicola di una dolcezza disarmante con abbondanti dosi d’ironia e azione, dove i passati dei protagonisti tornano a galla poco alla volta rivelandoci perché ognuno di essi prenda sempre più a cuore le sorti della piccola creaturina che porterà nella loro avventura quasi un’innaturale e comicissima serie di avvenimenti in grado di salvarli e proteggerli dalle più assurde vicende.
Ma in fondo se non si crede ai miracoli a Natale quando conviene farlo…
3) Parenti serpenti (M. Monicelli, ITA, 1992)
Entriamo nella Top 3 e lasciamo fuori i buoni sentimenti, perché Natale vuol dire stare in famiglia e avere a che fare coi parenti che non si rivedono da tanto tempo richiede una dose di sopportazione propria solo dei santi e dei mastri zen.
Ma se dietro alla macchina da presa c’è il maestro della commedia all’italiana possiamo mandare a benedire anche il minimo di pazienza e lanciarci in questa nerissima pellicola che parte nel più mite dei modi, con quattro fratelli e le rispettive famiglie che si ritrovano per le feste nella casa natale degli anziani genitori e poi, minuto dopo minuto, vediamo incrinarsi le buone facce che si costruiscono al cattivo gioco.
L’astio e il risentimento che ognuno porta verso un parente viene qui portato all’esasperazione con un gruppo di persone che, nonostante il sangue ed i buoni rapporti che dovrebbero intercorre tra loro, si lascia andare in sfoghi e attacchi sempre più spietati fino all’esplosivo finale che lascia intuire quanto tutti preferiscano un male comune che li lasci tornare alle loro vite lontano (e libere) dagli altri, piuttosto che condividere ancora questa patetica recita annuale del “esser tutti più buoni”.
Fatevi un regalo, se non lo avete ancora visto “esaudite un desiderio” e recuperatelo magari proprio durante queste feste, con nonne, zii, cugine e genitori sul divano assieme a voi.
2) Il leone d’inverno (A. Harvey, GBR, 1968)
In pratica ritorna sempre il concetto del punto precedente, ma tutto condito da un più raffinato gusto british, dovuto al fatto che l’opera è tratta dalla pièce teatrale di James Goldman.
Ho scritto un articolo intero su questo film, se volete sapere perché lo trovi tanto grandioso potrete trovare qui le motivazioni.
1) Benvenuti in casa Gori (A. Benvenuti, ITA, 1990)
Prendiamo quanto detto nelle due posizioni e fondiamolo assieme: pellicola tratta da uno spettacolo teatrale ma condito interamente dalla comicità italiana, o più nello specifico toscana, in questo caso.
E perché mai si trova al primo posto se in fondo ritornano temi già visti e affrontati?
Per il semplice motivo che qui non si butta nulla sull’esasperazione ma tutto profuma (o meglio puzza) di pura e semplice realtà: dialoghi, scuse, motivazioni e litigi che si possono (e purtroppo spesso si sentono) dentro casa di ognuno di noi. Non mancheranno comunque trovate geniali che vi faranno rimanere a bocca aperta o ribaltare dalle risate e mi verrebbe d’aggiungere per fortuna, perché riportano il film nella sua giusta dimensione di finzione e senza le quali sembrerebbe davvero di assistere al peggior pranzo di Natale della propria vita.
