Questa quarantena globale ha bloccato ogni attività di non primaria necessità per l’uomo.
Eventi sportivi di ogni portata sono stati i primi a saltare, dalle competizioni regionali fino alle Olimpiadi di Tokyo rimandate alla prossima estate.
Se proprio però non riuscite a resistere senza un’altra domenica allo stadio o al palazzetto ecco però che Koinervetti vi corre incontro. Siccome io e il buon Duccio siamo unicamente campioni del sollevamento di polemiche, abbiamo scelto di limitare solamente a 10 delle 20 posizioni le nostre scelte sui film sportivi. E chi meglio del nostro buon Michele per compilare la seconda top 10?
Questa operazione ci consente di darvi un più ampio spettro di scelta, mostrandovi cosa colpisce un appassionato di cinema in un film sportivo e cosa invece ricerca in queste pellicole un amante delle sfide atletiche e dei giochi di squadra.
Ma soprattutto permette a noi, come redazione, di confrontarci e creare un prodotto sempre più frutto dell’unione.

10) Sognando Beckham (G. Chadha, GBR, DEU, 2002)
Sarà che quando l’ho visto ero in quella fase pre-puberale in cui hai comunque gli ormoni a mille e ti fanno sembrare Keira Knightley l’emblema della perfezione.
Sarà che a me i film con Jonathan Ryhs-Meyers piacciono praticamente tutti. E qui boh, forse torna in ballo la faccenda degli ormoni.
Ma, nonostante sia oggettivamente una cagata apocalittica, me lo riguardo sempre volentieri.
“Bravo signor Bhamra, i rapporti di lavoro sono molto più importanti di amore”.
9) Rocky Marciano (C. Winkler, USA, 1999)
Sì, avete ragione, pare un film scappato fuori da una recensione di yotobi. È girato nel 1999, ma probabilmente il regista era entrato in trip nei meravigliosi anni ’80 e non ne era ancora uscito, basta guardare i titoli d’ingresso.
Però non lo so, sarà che per riuscire a capirci qualcosa l’ho visto a piccoli pezzetti in almeno dieci giorni, sì perché in italiano non mi è mai riuscito a trovarlo (probabilmente per il semplice fatto che non esista). Sarà che dopo cotale abnegazione, arrivato alla fine mi sono sentito realizzato come non mai. Però mi ha lasciato qualcosa. E mi ha aiutato a conoscere un po’ meglio quello che probabilmente è stato il peso massimo più forte di tutti i tempi, perché come si batte Tyson uno lo sa, come si batte Alì anche, ma come si sconfigge Marciano no, non lo sa nessuno.
8) Più in alto di tutti (E. La Salle, USA, 1996)
Qui quello che merita è il personaggio anche perché il film, supervisionato dal protagonista stesso, ne ripercorre le gesta. Potevo mettere questo oppure Robin Friday. Ho scelto quello su Manigault per il semplice motivo che preferisco il basket al calcio, soprattutto quando si parla di storie.
Cosa dire di uno che non ha mai giocato una partita in NBA, ma il cui soprannome era “The Greatest Of All Time”? Cosa dire di un giocatore che è stato definito da Kareem Abdul Jabbar, ovvero da quello che, a parer mio, è il giocatore di basket più forte di tutti i tempi “il più forte contro cui ho giocato”?
Beh, io dico che per tirare fuori un film interessante gli argomenti ci sono tutti…
7) La partita perfetta (W. Dear, USA, 2009)
Quanto piaceranno agli americani i film sul baseball?
Ecco, questo secondo me è quello che gli è uscito meglio.
Sarà che, chiamiamola così, per deformazione professionale, a me le storie vere piacciono.
Sarà che uno può dire quello che vuole, ma la storia della squadra sfigata che riesce a vincere, comunque, non può che appassionarti.
Ecco, aggiungeteci un prete, che ci sta sempre bene e avrete un film godibilissimo.
(Ah, non era una battuta eh. Grandi insegnanti di baseball e pugilato i preti. Se non ci fosse stato il cappellano della prigione non avremmo avuto Sonny Liston. Se non ci fosse stato un altro prete non ci sarebbe mai stato lo stretching del settimo inning nel baseball…)
6) Cinderella Man- Una ragione per lottare (R. Howard, USA, 2005)
Qua il discorso è diverso. Ron Howard alla regia, Russel Crowe nel ruolo del pugile, storia vera, ma strappalacrime il giusto. I presupposti per l’americanata c’erano tutti.
Invece a me è piaciuto. La storia è bella, perché ti apre uno stralcio sulla noble art di altri tempi. Io non ci capisco nulla, ma qua a me pare buona anche la regia.
Comunque, a parer mio, gran bel film.
E poi non credo ci sia uno sport che si presti meglio del pugilato ad essere rappresentato su uno schermo, my two cents.
5) Rush (R. Howard, GBR, DEU, USA, 2013)
Devo ammetterlo. Quando uscì non avevo grandi aspettative sul film.
Ero convinto che avrebbe finito per essere una parodia di ciò che Hunt e Lauda furono davvero.
E invece Ron Howard stupisce ancora.
Non che non sia romanzato eh, sia ben chiaro. Lauda era ossessivo compulsivo, ma non come nel film. Mentre Hunt non era un pazzo ubriacone donnaiolo, cioè, sì, lo era, ma dai qua è un po’ esagerato.
I due attori però mi piacciono e più ci si avvicina alla fine e più si comprende meglio che cosa fu quella assurda stagione 1976.
4) Chi non salta bianco è (R. Shelton, USA, 1992)
Woody Harrelson è Dio in persona, partiamo da questo presupposto.
Neri che credono che i bianchi non sappiano giocare a basket. Trash talk. Scommesse nei playground. Umorismo anni ’80. La scena dei tiri da 3 punti.
Questo film ha tutto ed è una figata pazzesca.
3) Allen Iverson-The answer (P. Denis, USA, 2016)
Ok, mi sa che state cominciando a comprendere quali siano le mie preferenze a livello sportivo.
Questo non dico che sia da cultori, ma un po’ in realtà sì, dai.
Perché a una persona normale di guardarsi, in inglese, un documentario celebrativo sulla carriera di uno che non ha mai vinto niente, probabilmente non passerebbe mai nemmeno per l’anticamera del cervello.
Però oh, ragazzi: Allen Iverson.
L’uomo che è stato in grado di vincere una sola partita nelle finals del 2001, ma di far sì che tutti, di quella serie, si ricordino soltanto gara 1: quella che Iverson vinse praticamente da solo.
Personaggio da bianco o nero, da amore o odio.
Se l’ho messo al terzo posto credo sia facile capire quale sentimento provi io.
2) Match Point (W. Allen, GBR, USA, 2005)
Qua lo sport non è il protagonista, ma il filo conduttore di un film, secondo me, ben fatto.
E non lo dico perché c’è Scarlett Johansson e quindi viene di nuovo a galla la storia degli ormoni… Cioè, magari un tantinello sì, ma vi assicuro che non è solo per questo.
Non sono uno di quelli che dice di Woody Allen che è un genio, anche perché, lo ripeto, di cinema ne capisco quanto Pellegatti di pallone.
Però l’ansia che ti trasmette andando avanti nella narrazione a me piace. Piace tanto.
E poi dai, il monologo iniziale va celebrato.
Perché tutti preferiamo avere fortuna piuttosto che talento.
1)Space Jam (J. Pytka, USA, 1996)
Non poteva che essere lui.
Americano, spaccone, autocelebrativo. Semplicemente il miglior film a tema sportivo che voi abbiate mai visto. Chi dice il contrario ha un secchio della spazzatura al posto del cuore.
E ve lo dice uno a cui Jordan non è mai stato troppo simpatico.
Però Space Jam è tutto, è uno di quei film che guarderei dodici volte in fila, senza stancarmi mai di vedere il braccione di Michael allungarsi per andare a schiacciare a canestro.
TOP 10 di Duccio e Yur Brynner
10)Palombella rossa (N. Moretti, ITA, 1989)
Moretti torna con il suo alter-ego Michele Apicella, qui un deputato comunista che, in seguito ad un incidente, ha perso la memoria e deve giocare con la sua squadra un partita di pallanuoto.
Un’analisi sulla condizione del PCI e sullo stato di chi si considerava comunista ma che non aveva ormai altro all’infuori di solite frasi fatte e sempre buone in ogni occasione.
Moretti è stanco di ciò, e anche spaventato ma la piscina e la pallanuoto (che da giovane praticò nella vita reale) non sono un elemento di protezione ma diventano il campo di battaglia in cui cerca sfogo e di rispondere a tono seppur con magri risultati.
Ne viene fuori così un’amara e disfattistica visione delle cose, quasi profetica vista la fine del partito avvenuta da lì a due anni, in mezzo a furiosi il cui unico scopo è essere contro (anche se stessi) e tanti esperti che hanno bisogno di guide spirituali e morali per sentirsi sicure e professionali.
E poi “Il Dottor Zivago”, “I’m on fire” di Springsteen e Battiato: c’è tutto per rendere un film magico.
9)Point Break- Punto di rottura (K. Bigelow, USA, 1991)
Sicuramente non privo di difetti, Point Break è comunque un film che fa dell’intrattenimento puro la sua linfa vitale ed è molto figlio, forse fin troppo, dell’epoca in cui uscì (quegli anni ’90 che si avvertono fino alla nausea). Assolutamente notevole, comunque, l’approccio della Bigelow, ai tempi moglie di James Cameron, ad un film che è in tutto e per tutto un manifesto di machismo sopra le righe che se gestito da chiunque altro sarebbe risultato ridicolo o che, peggio ancora, se uscisse oggi sarebbe additato da tutti negativamente come ritratto di “toxic masculinity” (“se uscisse oggi” perché dicono che ci sia un remake ma a me non risulta che esista).
Chiudendo un occhio sulla recitazione a dir poco acerba di Keanu Reeves e sulla sceneggiatura che ha delle sviste clamorose, va sottolineato che Point Break è un cult divertentissimo con un’eccellente mano alla regia e un ritmo perfetto. Il film della Bigelow usa il surf, e qualsiasi attività estrema, come via di fuga dalla monotonia della vita approcciandosi, seppur in maniera un po’ semplicistica, ad una visione della libertà molto interessante.
8) Appuntamento a Belleville (S. Chomet, FRA, BEL, CAN, 2003)
Film sull’amore.
L’amore del protagonista per il ciclismo, unica ragione di vita.
L’amore di una madre pronta a sostenere il figlio in tutto purché sia felice.
Un amore così grande che la porterà fino in capo al mondo e le farà compiere le più mirabolanti peripezie. Cose che però un buon genitore fa in fondo ogni giorno.
Col suo stile caricaturale Chomet crea quest’opera ricca di risate e risvolti, mischiando più generi e donandoci una commedia quasi interamente muta con una delle più grandi “pistole di Cechov” della storia.
7)Million Dollar Baby (C. Eastwood, USA, 2004)
Nel 2004 esce Million Dollar Baby, il dramma sportivo diretto, prodotto, interpretato e musicato da quel genio che è Clint Eastwood. La vicenda ruota attorno a Maggie Fitzgerald, interpretata da Hilary Swank, cameriera che ha passato i 30 anni ma che sogna ancora di diventare una boxeuse. Si rivolge ad un vecchio e scontroso allenatore, Eastwood appunto, che benché riluttante, accetterà di allenarla.
Million Dollar Baby è un film di grandissimo impatto che fa un uso sapiente della tipica struttura del film sulla boxe. Lo storytelling è talmente geniale che sembra quasi fin troppo facile e fa tutto quello che un film sportivo dovrebbe fare concentrandosi sia sulla condizione della protagonista che sui combattimenti sul ring.
Fa impressione anche il fatto che Eastwood raccontava la senilità con personaggi al crepuscolo 16 anni fa (in realtà già nel ’92 con Gli Spietati) e oggi, 2020, dirige e recita ancora. Titanico.
6) L’arbitro (P. Zucca, ITA, ARG, 2013)
Zucca riprende il soggetto del suo primo cortometraggio per realizzare questa brillante commedia sportiva che si evolve su due piani apparentemente così distanti l’uno dall’altro: un arbitro che sta per coronare il suo sogno di dirigere la finale di Champions e una squadra della terza categoria sarda.
Così facendo ci permette di vedere lo sport più amato nel nostro Paese a 360 gradi: da chi lo considera al pari di un credo religioso a chi si crede un puro paladino, ultimo protettore di questa nobile arte troppo a lungo infangata da giocatori e tifosi impuri.
Ma viene mostrato anche il calcio del riscatto sociale, il calcio non gioco di squadra ma dell’uomo partita, il calcio corrotto che lascia sempre i delusi a rimurginare dei tanti “se” e “ma” e tutti gli asti e passioni che gireranno attorno ai giocatori di queste sgangherate squadre.
Il tutto con una magnifica fotografia e una poesia di fondo che ormai solo il cinema indipendente sembra saper far combaciare.
5) Rocky (G. J. Alvidesen, USA, 1976)
Tutta la saga, almeno nei suoi primi quattro capitoli, meriterebbe di essere menzionata, ma il primo Rocky più di tutti riusciva a riscrivere il linguaggio cinematografico del genere utilizzando lo sport come pretesto per raccontare la storia di un uomo che viene dal lato sbagliato della strada che si ritrova con in mano l’occasione della vita.
Inoltre a Stallone gli vanno dati i meriti di essere un buon interprete e uno sceneggiatore eccezionale, tant’è che la sceneggiatura del primo Rocky viene presa ancora oggi come
esempio di perfezione formale nelle scuole di cinema americane. Checché se ne dica Rocky è davvero un film bellissimo, con dei dialoghi azzeccatissimi, colonna sonora da brividi e personaggi meravigliosi.
4) Ali (M. Mann, USA, 2001)
“Vola come una farfalla. Pungi come un’ape”.
Questo era il motto di Muhammad Alì e fin dal primo incontro con Sonny Liston dove pare danzare con quel gioco di piedi e le riprese vi faranno sentire lì su quel rovente ring.
Ma in questo film c’è anche la storia di Alì come simbolo per tutta la gente nera, che per decenni si è sentita chiedere sangue e sudore senza mai vedersi concessi gli stessi diritti dei bianchi.
E poi ancora tutte le lotte di Ali col suo peggior rivale: se stesso.
La passione per le donne, quel suo carattere rissoso che esplodeva in una sorta di rap ante litteram durante interviste e comizi.
Ma anche la tenacia e la capacità di rialzarsi dopo ogni caduta, che lo hanno riportato a salire sempre più in alto arrivando a toccare le più importantì vette; vittorie ormai non più di sola rilevanza sportiva.
3) Lo Spaccone (R. Rossen, USA, 1961)
Altra pietra miliare del cinema americano, Lo Spaccone (The Hustler) è la storia di Eddie “lo svelto” Felson, giocatore di biliardo ambizioso e sfrontato che sogna di diventare il campione dello stato sconfiggendo il leggendario Minnesota Fats. Le cose non andranno come previsto e ben presto si accorgerà di aver sacrificato tutto per arrivare al suo scopo. Perfetta metafora di cosa vuol dire partire dal fondo ed arrivare in alto perdendo tutto ciò a cui si teneva.
La pellicola di Rossen rimane impressa nella memoria per la bravura dei suoi interpreti, su tutti un giovane Paul Newman, e per come ci racconta l’America dei falsi miti e le ossessioni che divorano l’uomo grazie anche ad un finale amarissimo, fra i più belli di sempre.
Il film segnò, fra i tanti, Martin Scorsese che ne diresse un seguito 25 anni dopo sempre
con Newman: Il colore dei soldi. Quest’ultimo, benché non abbia il valore storico-culturale di The Hustler e non sia pienamente riuscito, è pur sempre un film godibile in cui il destino offre una nuova chance a Eddie lo svelto.
2) Fuga per la vittoria (J. Houston, USA, 1981)
Per chi ama il calcio, è come se Fuga per la vittoria si fosse giocato veramente.
Da un lato perché il dramma di cui ci parla John Huston è ispirato alla “Partita della morte” che si giocò realmente tra ufficiali tedeschi e giocatori ucraini nel ’42 e della quale esistono molteplici versioni, dall’altro lato perché nessuno è mai riuscito a riprendere il calcio come ha fatto Huston in questa pellicola.
Il film vede attori di prim’ordine come Michael Caine, Max Von Sydow e il tanto ingiustamente vituperato Stallone affiancati da alcuni dei più grandi calciatori dell’epoca: Bobby Moore, Paul Van Himst, Deyna, Ardiles e “O Rei” Pelé. Fuga per la vittoria è un film magnifico e unico nel suo genere per come riesce ad unire all’epica della narrazione una forte concezione di libertà, rappresentata dallo sport, e la psicologia dei personaggi, i
quali restano nel cuore.
1) Toro Scatenato (M. Scorsese, USA, 1980)
Molto probabilmente uno dei migliori film della storia del cinema, Toro Scatenato (Raging Bull) è il ritratto nudo e crudo, non privo di controversie, della vita del pugile Jake LaMotta, interpretato da uno stratosferico De Niro in uno dei suoi ruoli più iconici che gli valse anche l’Oscar. Il film nacque proprio da un’idea dello stesso De Niro che propose il progetto all’amico Scorsese, il quale era alle prese con la depressione e la dipendenza da droghe.
Raging Bull è un affresco sul successo, sugli affetti e sul sentimento di rivalsa dell’uomo che ha segnato un’epoca e tutto il cinema a seguire. Girato in uno splendido bianco e nero (così come lo erano i vecchi filmati dei combattimenti di LaMotta), e con un montaggio estremamente innovativo che mostrasse i combattimenti da “dentro” il ring e non da fuori,
come li avrebbe visti uno spettatore, il capolavoro di Scorsese si pone come un’importante riflessione sulla violenza e la brutalità che contraddistinguono la boxe e l’indole di chi da essa rimane segnato.
Scorsese era convinto che questo sarebbe stato il suo ultimo film, perciò cercò di renderlo il miglior testamento possibile. Ci riuscì al punto tale che il film fu la sua rinascita (e la prima collaborazione con Joe Pesci, qua nel ruolo del fratello di Jake).
