Ebbene sì, ho iniziato a scrivere questo racconto alle 00:52, perché di notte si parla meglio che durante il giorno, si pensa meglio, possiamo osservare meglio noi stessi e l’ho voluto fare a tema con un disco che è assolutamente “notturno” dove le stelle sono miliardi di sonagli, e la voce graffiante, profonda e incantevole di Anthony Caleb Followill insieme ai suoi due fratelli e il cugino, riescono a suggestionare durante l’ascolto e in più riescono a dare quel brividino che se è preso bene è tanto godibile.
La Notte Bianca
Only By The Night porta i Kings of Leon a nuove sonorità, più precisamente l’alternative rock, per lasciare il loro beneamato “southern” dei primi dischi. Li porta ad avere più ambizioni, più maturità, delle canzoni da stadio, ecco perché qui si spiega il genere “Arena rock“. Un disco affascinante quello dei KOL, un disco che se viene ascoltato di notte dà il suo particolare effetto, un disco che è perfetto per i nottambuli e visto che questa sera è perfetta, siete pronti a passare queste 5/6 ore con me finché non fa giorno? Iniziamo allora!
Pezzi bui come Closer e Crawl creano il clima esatto per accendersi una o due sigarette e osservare qualche stella cadente, ma ad un certo punto parte una canzone che ti fa fare qualche mossa d’anca, mentre il vicino ti guarda stranito, Sex On Fire dal tono rock leggerino e a volte psichedelico, da un po’ di colore a questa notte che non è come tutte le altre.
Qui parte la lacrimuccia: è l’ora di Use Somebody, un pezzo strepitoso ed è qui che si sente il vero spirito, la vera energia dei Kings of Leon, intrigante, liberatoria, un vero gioiellino che può essere considerata insieme all’ultima citata il cuore pulsante dell’album. Adesso è l’ora di prendere le chiavi e di farsi un giro in macchina notturno, lasciamo il posto alla canzone “Manhattan” dove quelle chitarre dal sound crepuscolare riescono a creare quel momento esatto per osservare tutte le luci delle macchine che passano, una canzone che può aiutare a riaffiorare qualche ricordo bello di infanzia.

La notte e ancora giovane ma parcheggiamo la macchina per qualche ora e facciamoci una passeggiata, Il disco prende un po’ di romanticismo nei seguenti pezzi Reverly, 17 e Notion delle vere colonne sonore per sentire il gelo della notte, notare la gente che entra in fabbrica per iniziare il turno o anche osservare in lontananza le luci della città.
Dopo qualche minuto notiamo un bar ancora aperto, e I Want You è la canzone perfetta per bersi una cioccolata calda, dal sound quasi caraibico mentre la tazza ci scalda le mani, vediamo una striscia luminosa tra le montagne, si fa presagire che la notte sta per finire.
“Be Somebody” e “Cold Desert” sono le canzoni adatte per riprendere le chiavi della macchina e rifarsi tutta la strada per tornare a casa, durante la guida osservare l’alba, tutto quello che avevamo iniziato. Una notte dove nel mentre abbiamo ascoltato questo fantastico album forse non ci siamo sentiti poi così soli o chiusi in noi stessi.

I Kings of leon l’hanno pensata bene, questo album è un viaggio notturno nel vero senso della parola, un disco che tiene compagnia, dove ogni singola canzone ricorda ogni attimo della nottata, e anche se questa notte non è stata niente di che, solo aver guardato le stelle, fatto un giro in macchina, una passeggiata, bevuto una cioccolata calda e poi essersene tornati a casa è stato solo un modo di vivere la musica, e alla fine deve essere proprio così, la musica deve essere vissuta oltre che ascoltata. Non è un vero e proprio concept album, però la musica ha quella magia che rende sia le parole che le melodie degne di avere quel valore in più. Fatevelo vostro e se non riuscirete a dormire, questo disco sarà la colonna sonora delle vostre notti.
