Sabato 20 aprile si è esibito nella bellissima location del Karemaski Multi Art Club di Arezzo uno dei gruppi più originali, esotici ed interessanti del panorama musicale italiano. Un progetto in continua evoluzione che oggi conta ben sei elementi e a cui auguriamo tutto il successo e la fortuna possibile: La Rappresentante di Lista. Abbiamo incontrato i due frontman Dario e Veronica per una chiacchierata.
Come va ragazzi? Come sta andando il tour di Go Go Diva?
«Mah, devo dire che va molto bene. La sensazione è quella di una sorpresa continua, in ogni luogo in cui siamo stati fino ad ora siamo stati accolti, devo dire, nel migliore dei modi. Un pubblico calorosissimo. Noi sul palco quindi ci sentiamo felici, felici di suonare, di trasmettere attraverso queste canzoni dei sentimenti anche forti, che vediamo negli occhi della gente vibrare ed essere percepiti all’ennesima potenza, anche con significati nuovi a seconda del modo in cui loro percepiscono le canzoni.»
Sappiamo che il vostro nome è ispirato al referendum sul nucleare che si è tenuto in Italia nel 2011. Vi ricordate che cosa avete votato in quell’occasione?
«Quattro “sì”, che era “sì” per dire “no”.»
Su Wikipedia siete definiti come “gruppo rock progressivo”. Vi rivedete in questa definizione?
«Forse perché cambiamo progressivamente identità e genere, sarà questo (ride). Sicuramente, rispetto alla tradizione progressive che c’è in Italia, probabilmente qualcosa riguardo ai testi, il nostro non cadere in testi banali, la continua ricerca nei suoni, qualche parola strana nei testi e sei già progressive (ride). C’è qualcosa di progressivo in quel che facciamo, ma non ci rappresenta a pieno. Noi abbiamo sempre detto che non ci piace darci etichette di genere, quindi questa cosa ci permette oggi di essere liberi ed avere grande fantasia e immaginazione che magari limitandoti a darti una categoria ti fossilizzerebbe un pochino. Che poi non è solo un fatto di generi musicali: come sapete benissimo i generi si portano dietro un’estetica, che riguarda i video, le fotografie, lo stare sul palco e su questo ci è sempre piaciuto passare dall’Hip Hop al Rock, alla musica classica senza soluzione di continuità. Essere liberi.»
Sappiamo che sarete ospiti al concerto del Primo Maggio a Roma. Come siete riusciti ad arrivare a questo traguardo?
«In realtà credo che sia stato per via di un interessamento da parte di chi organizza il Primo Maggio, anche se davvero non sono sicuro di come sia successo. Al di là di come siamo finiti a suonare lì, penso che quello che abbiamo fatto in questi anni è stato resistere anche nei momenti più difficili, durante i tour, anche in situazioni in cui era più difficile continuare a portare in giro quello che facciamo, non tanto per questioni economiche ma per questioni logistiche. Il fatto di essere un realtà oggi, che siamo al terzo disco, dopo quasi 9 anni, probabilmente rientra tra i fattori che ci hanno fornito questa possibilità.
Ad oggi possiamo dire di avere un prodotto che noi riteniamo di qualità, di un certo valore, e abbiamo trovato delle persone che lavorano insieme a noi, una sorta di “crew”, che vivono un po’ dello stesso entusiasmo e che quindi riesce a lavorare con gioia. Dall’etichetta discografica al management, dall’ufficio stampa all’agenzia di booking, sono persone che credono fermamente in quello che facciamo e quindi fanno lavoro di squadra. Non so in realtà quanto il Primo Maggio sarà un traguardo, spero che sia un punto di partenza per nuove avventure della Rappresentante di Lista.»
In un recente articolo di Noisyroad, Palermo è stata definita “la capitale dell’it-pop”, con band come i Giocattoli, The Heron Temple, e (ovviamente) anche La Rappresentante di Lista. Che rapporto avete con Palermo?
«Un rapporto assolutamente viscerale, per quanto mi riguarda è un po’ la mia seconda casa, io ho iniziato ad andare lì per seguire il teatro, una compagnia che era quella di Emma Dante, la Sud Cost Occidentale, e da lì non me ne sono più andata. Poi ho iniziato a lavorare con Dario in teatro come attori, e lì abbiamo cominciato a lavorare come band, a scrivere le prime canzoni, quindi per me Palermo è stata la svolta della mia vita. È stata una città che mi ha accolto e che mi ha fatto sentire subito a casa, che mi ha fatto crescere e mi ha fatto odiare anche determinate cose… È stata una bella scuola.
Nel vostro primo disco, (Per la) Via di Casa, ci sono due brani che vengono cantati in tedesco. Da dove nasce questa idea?
«Io parlo il tedesco, ricordo che sono riuscita a studiarlo molto bene già alle superiori grazie ad una professoressa veramente molto brava, e mi sono innamorata della lingua. Per quanto non riesca oggi a utilizzarla e a parlarla così frequentemente, ricordo perfettamente come si scrive e quindi mi è venuta la curiosità, visto che non riuscivamo a scrivere una canzone. Avevamo un tema da trattare e la musica, ma non riuscivamo a mettere le parole una dietro l’altra in italiano. Così si provò a scrivere il testo in tedesco traducendo le cose che avevamo appuntato in italiano, anche in maniera molto elementare, e filavano lisce. Così abbiamo preso questa briga e chissà che non succeda di nuovo di parlare in un’altra lingua.»
La vostra musica è caratterizzata dall’utilizzo di strumenti elettronici come pad e synth. Da dove nasce questa scelta stilistica?
«È stato un processo molto naturale. Passato il periodo in cui volevamo solo raccontare quello che volevamo nelle canzoni con una chitarrina e la voce di Veronica, il nostro intento è stato sempre quello di costruire per ogni canzone un’orchestrazione e probabilmente gli strumenti elettronici ti danno dal punto di vista compositivo la possibilità di ricreare certe sonorità pur non avendo un’orchestra vera. Ti permettono di ricreare una moltitudine di suoni con tanti colori e timbri e sanno essere molto espressivi. Poi c’è il gusto musicale, noi siamo stati sicuramente influenzati dalla musica elettronica che comunque amiamo.
Un altro fattore è che ci siamo trovati in uno studio pieno di sintetizzatori con cui abbiamo iniziato a giocare. Da lì abbiamo iniziato a studiare, anche perché la sintesi sonora è una materia piuttosto complessa, insieme a Enrico che è il nostro tastierista. L’uso dei campionamenti ci ha molto avvantaggiato, ad esempio ci permette di riprodurre il suono di uno steel drum che è uno strumento acustico che sarebbe difficile portare fisicamente in un live. Campionare strumenti reali per ottenere suoni sintetici da inserire nei nostri brani è un elemento che c’interessava.»
Il vostro modo di girare i videoclip è molto particolare, s’incentra molto sulla figura di Veronica e ricorda molto Billie Eilish. Qual è l’idea che sta alla base di questo lavoro?
«Siccome abbiamo fatto molti errori in passato, la cosa bella di avere un progetto è che possiamo imparare da quegli stessi errori. In passato abbiamo cercato di costruire nei video dei racconti alternativi rispetto a quelli presenti nelle canzoni, penso al video di Bora Bora per esempio. Non avendo i mezzi materiali per fare una vera produzione cinematografica, come può fare Billie Eilish, il rischio è che il risultato fosse “cheap”, cioè un po’ scarso.
Questo disco è molto incentrato sulla femminilità, sul racconto di una voce che poi è quella di Veronica, abbiamo deciso di semplificarci il lavoro e incentrare tutto su qualcosa che sicuramente abbiamo di forte, ovvero la personalità e la forza espressiva e performativa di Veronica, ed effettivamente poi l’idea del video verticale perché c’interessava la figura intera. Ormai si usa molto di più per i selfie e rimanda subito alla soggettività, rispetto alla ripresa orizzontale che rimanda a una narrazione oggettiva.»
Sappiamo che nel 2017 avete partecipato allo Sziget Festival, che ha una portata internazionale molto grande, con nomi di artisti notevoli. Come siete riusciti ad arrivare a un traguardo del genere e cosa ci potete raccontare su questa esperienza?
«Allora, siamo arrivati lì in furgone, dopo 12 ore di strada. Avevamo il desiderio di andare a suonare allo Sziget, così abbiamo scritto ai ragazzi dell’organizzazione, e loro hanno accettato. Sicuramente è un festival molto grande, pieno di energia dove la dimensione musicale, quella dei concerti dal vivo è solo una parte del tutto, c’è il teatro e il cibo (per lo più spazzatura).
Dopo il nostro concerto abbiamo deciso di rimanere lì altri tre giorni a vedere il festival. Il concerto è stato una parentesi in un contesto in cui siamo stati per lo più spettatori. Lo consiglierei a tutti gli artisti, ma più dal punto di vista esperienziale che non professionale, anche perché sotto il profilo lavorativo vale molto di più un tour in Italia. Il rischio spesso è quello di andare fuori in Europa e di suonare solo di fronte agli italiani. Bisogna strutturare bene un discorso di esportazione all’estero per far sì che abbia senso fare un tour in Europa. Bisogna rivolgersi ad un ufficio stampa straniero, o che comunque conosca bene gli ambienti o che ti permetta di fare delle uscite discografiche all’estero.
Molti tour di artisti italiani fuori sono rivolti agli italiani residenti all’estero, in cui non c’è niente di male ma il problema è che quando vai fuori dovresti scoprire nuove sonorità. C’è da dire che rimangono comunque belle esperienze, importanti e formative che ti permettono di imparare molte cose come stare su un palco e capire quali sono le band del tuo livello che vengono da altri paesi, come ad esempio dalla Grecia o dalla Romania.»
