Eccoci tornati con una seconda coppia di Top 10* e questa volta vi portiamo alla scoperta delle migliori performance attoriali da parte di cantanti. Un vero artista musicale sa come tenere il palco e ciò comporta anche una capacità di saper utilizzare anche il corpo e non solo la voce per esprimersi al suo meglio.
In più alcuni cantanti hanno lavorato così tanto alla creazione della loro immagine da aver dato vita a veri e propri personaggi. Giustamente perché un regista non dovrebbe utilizzarli, a volte come caratteristi, per impreziosire le sue opere?
Come già specificato: ricordatevi che ciò che leggerete sarà frutto di gusti e preferenze personali degli autori. Siamo ben consapevoli pertanto che ci saranno illustri assenti, ma prima di lamentarvi assicuratevi di recuperare tutte e 20 le posizioni.

TOP 10 cantanti di Duccio
10) Sting (The Police) in Dune (D. Lynch, USA, 1984)
Il kolossal fantascientifico di David Lynch tratto dai romanzi di Herbert ebbe una storia travagliata. La produzione di Dune, partita dal progetto ambizioso e poi naufragato di Alejandro Jodorowsky, continuò con problemi di produzione e continue revisioni della sceneggiatura (Lynch arrivò a scrivere 6 bozze diverse). Il film subì pesanti tagli nella versione finale in fase di montaggio, i quali minarono la comprensibilità e finì con l’essere un clamoroso insuccesso di pubblico e critica. Insuccesso ammesso e confermato più volte da Lynch stesso, il quale prima del montaggio fatto con l’accetta aveva tutto un altro film in mente. Tuttavia è ingeneroso definire Dune un brutto film. Da una parte per i “vermoni” creati da Carlo Rambaldi, da un’altra perché c’è più cinema in un’inquadratura di Lynch su Kyle Machlachlan che in 3/4 della Hollywood odierna.
Tra i tanti pregi del film che contribuiscono a renderlo un cult vi è la breve, seppur simpaticissima, performance di Sting nei panni dell’“adorato” Feyd. La star inglese, ai tempi frontman dei Police, non voleva far parte del film perché lo riteneva confusionario e caotico. Si lasciò convincere dopo aver incontrato Lynch, persuaso che il futuro autore di Twin Peaks avrebbe fatto qualcosa di straordinario.
Sting ha rivelato di recente che tuttora non sa di cosa parli Dune.
Come dargli torto?
9) Max Gazzè in Basilicata coast to coast (R. Papaleo, ITA, 2010)
Si può dire di tutto su Rocco Papaleo, fra le sue collaborazioni di dubbio gusto artistico e la sua carriera da attore tutto sommato modesta. Tuttavia nel 2010, quasi a caso, esce il suo brillante esordio alla regia. Un road-movie anomalo e a tratti molto personale. Basilicata coast to coast racconta la storia di quattro amici che, arrivati alla soglia della mezza età, conducono delle esistenze prettamente vuote. La loro passione per la musica, vero motore della pellicola di Papaleo, li sprona ad intraprendere un viaggio (totalmente irrazionale) dalla costa tirrenica a quella ionica per partecipare al festival della musica locale.
Max Gazzè, già allora attivo da 20 anni come cantante e polistrumentista, interpreta Franco, il contrabbassista del gruppo, il quale ha smesso di parlare (ironia della sorte) a seguito della morte della moglie. Un personaggio tragicomico che rimane nel cuore, reso benissimo da Gazzè grazie al suo “sguardo sempre triste” e impersonato con la stessa leggerezza che dimostra nel canto. Tra l’altro il cantautore romano contribuisce anche alla colonna sonora con la sua splendida “Mentre dormi”, premiata con il David alla miglior canzone originale.
8) Francesco Guccini in Radiofreccia (L. Ligabue, ITA, 1998)
Quando uscì Radiofreccia nessuno si aspettava un successo di grande portata. Eppure il debutto cinematografico di Luciano Ligabue valse 3 David di Donatello, 2 Nastri d’argento e 4 Ciak d’oro. Fu la consacrazione definitiva di Stefano Accorsi che offrì un’interpretazione memorabile nei panni di Ivan Benassi, detto “Freccia”. Il protagonista costituì un punto di riferimento per i giovani assurgendo la pellicola all’idea di film generazionale americano. Persino l’emittente radiotelevisiva del gruppo
RTL 102.5 prende nome dal film.
Ma la cosa più assurda in assoluto di Radiofreccia è una e soltanto: la presenza di Francesco Guccini. Il monumento vivente del cantautorato italiano infatti ricopre il ruolo da comprimario del burbero barista locale. L’autore modenese era talmente perfetto per la parte che un giorno, durante le riprese dentro ad un bar, si presentò un cliente esterno alla troupe chiedendogli da bere. Difatti la genialità di Ligabue (il quale avrebbe fatto meglio ad insistere sulla carriera da regista e sceneggiatore) fu quella di scrivere il personaggio appositamente per Guccini, avendo in mente solo lui per la parte. Il cantautore accettò di buon grado, offrendo anche una discreta prova da caratterista.
7) Tom Jones in Mars Attacks! (T. Burton, USA, 1996)
La commedia nera di fantascienza diretta da Tim Burton è uno dei film più curiosi degli anni ’90, essendo uscito quasi in concomitanza con Independence Day, altro kolossal degenere e considerato proprio per questo come un “fratello maggiore”. Malgrado la cattiva accoglienza all’epoca, Burton mise in scena un’ambientazione grottesca di grande impatto con un ritmo scanzonato. Da menzionare gli ottimi effetti speciali per rappresentare i terribili marziani e un cast stellare, fra i quali non si possono non nominare Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close e Rod Steiger.
A sorpresa però è Tom Jones a salire in cattedra. La popstar britannica infatti compare nei panni di se stesso esibendosi con il suo classico “It’s not unusual”, per poi divenire il protagonista de facto nell’epilogo del film. Quella che di per sé può sembrare una banale prova canora si rivela difatti funzionale alla storia e contribuisce a rendere ancora più esilarante la commedia di Burton, tanto che Jones è da molti considerato il vero eroe della pellicola.
6) Jared Leto (Thirty Seconds to Mars) in Dallas Buyers Club (J. Vallée, USA, 2013)
In questo caso più che di un cantante improvvisatosi abilmente attore, parliamo di un vero e proprio attore la cui carriera nel cinema ha surclassato nettamente quella musicale. Non è un caso che Leto avesse già lavorato con registi del calibro di Fincher, Malick e Aronofsky ben prima di recitare in Dallas Buyers Club. Tuttavia se all’inizio c’era la sensazione che avesse talento, è grazie al film diretto da Jean Marc-Vallée che si consacra definitivamente tra i grandi nomi del cinema contemporaneo, aggiudicandosi Oscar, Golden Globe e il plauso di pubblico e critica. Dallas Buyers Club è ispirato alla storia vera di Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey), elettricista texano a cui viene diagnosticato l’AIDS. Il film racconta la sua battaglia contro il sistema sanitario statunitense che lo ha pressoché abbandonato.
Durante il suo calvario, e il contestuale traffico illegale di farmaci alternativi, Ron conosce Rayon (Leto), giovane transgender anch’egli malato e dall’esistenza tormentata, data la forte intolleranza ed ignoranza nel Texas degli anni ’80. Il film, che ad un primo sguardo può sembrare il prevedibile dramma strappalacrime “acchiappapremi” e inutilmente progressista, è in realtà un dramma coinvolgente girato con gran mestiere. La trasposizione è ben sceneggiata e (soprattutto) ben recitata dai trasformisti McConaughey e Leto, i quali dimostrano un’intesa perfetta sul set.
5) Alice Cooper in Il signore del male (J. Carpenter, USA, 1987)
È il 1987 ed esce nelle sale “Prince of Darkness” di John Carpenter. Si tratta del secondo capitolo di un’ideale “Trilogia dell’Apocalisse”, iniziata con “La Cosa” e terminata con “Il Seme della Follia”, che diverrà presto uno dei film più redditizi del regista. Così come per il terzo capitolo, Carpenter firma un horror sovrannaturale concettualmente molto complesso e stratificato, che trova una base solida nel nichilismo apocalittico e nella necessità di fondare i limiti della fede. Non manca una sottile critica al capitalismo: i primi a soccombere per mano dell’influenza demoniaca sono senzatetto, i reietti che vivono ai margini del sistema. Proprio nei panni di uno di essi troviamo Alice Cooper. La rockstar di Detroit, oltre a comporre il brano principale della colonna sonora, guida l’assalto dei vagabondi alla chiesa abbandonata dove si trova il gruppo di protagonisti.
Poche volte si è visto un casting così azzeccato per un artista musicale, poiché, pur avendo un’esperienza recitativa esigua, Alice Cooper incarna perfettamente lo stile di Carpenter e il genere a lui tanto caro: l’horror. Allo stesso modo dell’ “artigiano” del cinema, Cooper scrive testi che attraverso la narrativa horror veicolano temi quali la religione, la politica ed i problemi reali della società. In più c’è da dire che già di per sé, Alice Cooper fa paura pure senza trucco, figuriamoci nelle vesti di adepto di Satana.
4) Alanis Morissette in Dogma (K. Smith, USA, 1999)
Kevin Smith nel corso degli anni ha avuto una carriera estremamente discontinua, quasi bipolare, toccando l’apice all’esordio con Clerks per poi proseguire con alti e bassi. Tra gli “alti” va però ricordato Dogma, commedia fantasy del ’99 concepita come gigantesca satira del cristianesimo, che annovera nel cast Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Linda Fiorentino, Alan Rickman e… Proprio Alanis Morissette. La bellissima cantautrice canadese interpreta Dio nell’atto finale della pellicola e, ironicamente come nel caso di Max Gazzè, è muta! La spiegazione che viene data è semplice: dal momento che nessun essere mortale può udire la voce di Dio, è il serafino Metatron, con il volto di un sempre eccezionale Rickman, ad agire come messaggero del Creatore.
Dogma è un film piacevole, violento e scorretto quanto serve, ma affronta gli aspetti più discussi del cristianesimo in maniera intelligente. In mezzo a questo contesto trasgressivo, il “Dio” donna di Alanis Morissette rappresenta una caricatura innocente, giocosa e spensierata di un Essere superiore che non si cura di quanto capita all’umanità. Uno dei tocchi più geniali della filmografia di Smith, dal momento che in Dogma si ride tanto, ma dietro la risata c’è un’evidente dichiarazione d’intenti. La cantante 7 volte Grammy collabora, chiaramente, anche alla colonna sonora con il brano “Still”.
3) Frank Sinatra in Da qui all’eternità (F. Zimmerman, USA, 1953)
Frank Sinatra ha raggiunto un grande successo da attore tanto quanto nella musica, ma all’epoca dell’uscita di “From here to eternity” versava in condizioni pessime. Da un lato la carriera da attore sembrava al capolinea, dopo due flop di seguito al botteghino, dall’altro la travagliata relazione con Ava Gardner ne minò l’umore. A questo contesto si aggiungeva anche il fisco che lo stava dissanguando. Fu una fortuna quando nel ’53 riuscì a strappare un contratto con la Capitol Records e a convincere Fred Zinneman a recitare nel suo nuovo film. Sinatra si trovò a sostituire Eli Wallach, il quale abbandonò il progetto perché non soddisfatto dell’ingaggio. Riuscì così a salvare contemporaneamente la carriera di cantante e di attore. Da lì in poi si può dire che è stata tutta una risalita e il soldato Angelo Maggio è entrato di diritto nella storia del cinema.
Sinatra ha dato un’interpretazione storica che voleva dire molto anche a livello personale. Il suo personaggio era infatti un giovane italoamericano divorato dai vizi del fumo e dell’alcol dal temperamento burrascoso, ma impossibile da non amare. Recitando al fianco di altri due mostri sacri della “vecchia” Hollywood quali Montgomery Clift e Burt Lancaster, Sinatra si aggiudicò il suo primo Oscar come miglior attore non protagonista.
2) Tom Waits in Dracula di Bram Stoker (F.F. Coppola, USA, 1992)
Francis Ford Coppola firma un capolavoro dell’horror rileggendo l’opera originale sul vampiro più famoso della letteratura. Il suo Dracula è un film che eccelle praticamente in tutto, dalla sceneggiatura alla recitazione fino ancora alla ricostruzione della scenografia e i costumi. Un cast eccezionale, guidato da un Gary Oldman in stato di grazia e “invecchiato” analogicamente per merito di un trucco stupefacente, che vede Anthony Hopkins, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Tom Waits e Cary Elwes. Il mitico cantante Blues, già attore feticcio dello stesso Coppola e di Gilliam, impersona Renfield, collega di Jonathan Harker, caduto nella follia dopo aver conosciuto il conte Dracula.
Waits si conferma attore di grande spessore, offrendo una prova esemplare per magnetismo e caratterizzazione nei pochi minuti a disposizione sullo schermo. Nonostante il suo personaggio fosse un mero comprimario nella storia, la performance da applausi di Tom Waits combinata con la messa in scena perfetta di Coppola, fanno di Renfield un soggetto clamorosamente spaventoso. Forse il più terrificante della pellicola dopo il Dracula di Oldman.
1) David Bowie in The Prestige (C. Nolan, GBR, USA, 2006)
Fare una top 10 di cantanti che hanno detto la loro nel cinema è più che altro un pretesto per poter parlare dell’importanza di determinati film e la bravura di alcuni volti della musica nel reinventarsi in qualcosa di nuovo. Tuttavia, se c’è una voce che più di chiunque altro ha lasciato un segno nella storia del cinema è proprio il Duca Bianco. In maniera diretta perché ha lavorato con Scorsese, Lynch, Landis e Nolan. Indirettamente perché suo figlio Duncan ha intrapreso la carriera dal regista firmando quel gioiello che è Moon.
In uno degli ultimissimi ruoli sul grande schermo Bowie interpretò Nikola Tesla, il geniale inventore precursore della moderna ingegneria elettrica. Nel fanta-thriller di Nolan, Tesla entra in gioco aiutando Angier (Hugh Jackman), un prestigiatore in crisi, ad avere la meglio sul rivale Borden (Christian Bale) che esibendosi nel “trasporto umano” ottiene costantemente il successo del pubblico. Non riuscendo a dare una spiegazione razionale, che non ricada nella banalità, sul numero del collega, Angier si affida completamente alla (fanta)scienza teorizzata da Tesla, il quale però mette in guardia il prestigiatore dal male che la sua invenzione può provocare.
Bowie è semplicemente fenomenale nel ruolo. Ruba totalmente la scena nel momento della sua comparsa, conquistando lo spettatore solo con il fascino e il carisma di un attore navigato. Nolan supplicò il cantante e pittore londinese di accettare la parte, ammettendo che se avesse rifiutato, avrebbe dovuto rimuovere Tesla dal film. Secondo il regista infatti nessun altro poteva farlo al posto dell’autore di Ziggy Stardust. Ma senza non sarebbe stata la stessa cosa: questa rappresentazione di Nikola Tesla è la marcia in più che eleva il thriller ad un livello superiore. La malattia che ha stroncato il Duca Bianco non fa che aumentare i rimpianti se si pensa a quanto ancora avrebbe potuto dare alla settima arte.

10) Iggy Pop in Dead Man (J. Jarmusch, USA, 1995)
Poco più che un’apparizione, ma vedere “l’Iguana” vestito da donna che legge versetti biblici su atroci punizioni e supplizi che spetteranno ai pervertiti, mentre Billy Bob Thornton e Jared Harris si contendono Johnny Depp per stabilire chi avrà diritto ad approfittarne sessualmente, è senza dubbio uno dei punti più esilaranti di questo atipico western in bianco e nero.
L’ex leader degli Stooges conosceva il pupillo di Tim Burton già dagli anni ’80. Depp infatti apriva i suoi concerti assieme ai The Kids, inoltre avevano recitato assieme in Cry Baby di Waters nel ’90.
9) Debbie Harry (Blondie) in Videodrome (D. Cronenberg, CAN, 1983)
Difficilmente si potrebbe trovare donna più bella di Deborah Ann Harry. Dotata di un innato fascino, tale da creare un’aura eterea attorno ad essa, risulta più che perfetta per questa parte che pare mischiare la Femme Fatale del cinema noir alla Donna Angelo della letteratura medievale italiana.
Sensuale e curiosa, accompagnerà e persuaderà James Woods, oltre che lo spettatore, in un vortice di sesso, violenza, dolore sempre più distopico e allucinogeno. Che dire se non:
“Morte a Videodrome. Gloria e vita alla nuova carne!”
8) Frank Sinatra in Va’ e uccidi (J. Frankenheimer, USA, 1962)
Sia chiaro: qui si giudicano le interpretazioni dei cantanti/attori e non la qualità dei film. In quel caso al titolo di cui sto per parlare spetterebbe di diritto il primo posto in qualunque classifica.
Sinatra, oltre alla splendida voce, aveva un bel paio di occhi azzurri ben abbinati a quella faccia da simpatica canaglia. Egli iniziò a recitare oltre che cantare già dagli anni ’40, riuscendo così ad inanellare, in una carriera decennale fatta di alti e bassi, anche film veramente grandiosi come questa storia a metà fra lo spionaggio e il thriller.
Non gli viene data la parte di protagonista assoluto, anche perché Angela Lansbury e Laurence Harvey rubano completamente la scena a chiunque, ma “The Voice” porta comunque a termine una delle sue migliori performance in perfetta linea col resto della pellicola.
7) Massimo Ranieri in La macchinazione (D. Grieco, ITA, 2016)
Ranieri ha da sempre il suo eclettismo ed amore per le varie arti dello spettacolo. Inizia a cantare a soli 13 anni e il debutto sul grande schermo tarda di soli 5 anni, col “Metello” di Bolognini che gli regala subito riconoscimenti e premi. Non pago, decide pure di calcare i palcoscenici e non c’era da aspettarsi nulla di diverso da un artista proveniente da Napoli. La formazione teatrale emerge tutta in quest’opera del 2016, dove viene scelto per impersonare il regista Pier Paolo Pasolini (che incontrò personalmente in precedenza e lo sentì esclamare “Ma sai che mi assomigli proprio”) e l’impostazione di voce e corpo si scontrano con lo stile recitativo degli altri attori.
Ciò però, più che come debolezza, potrebbe esser letto sia come rappresentazione di un intellettuale fuori da ogni schema culturale/politico/religioso quale il regista emiliano fu, sia come se Pasolini stesso si rendesse conto d’essere un personaggio all’interno di quella tragica farsa che dà il titolo al film, il cui triste finale era già stato scritto da ignote e potenti mani.
Fra le altre “apparizioni” al cinema di Ranieri va citato l’ottimo lavoro come doppiatore per Il gobbo di Notre Dame della Disney.
6) David Bowie in Furyo (N. Ōshima, GBR, JPN, NZL, 1983)
Il Duca Bianco, oltre che per il suo genio musicale, fece breccia nel cuore di molti fan ed entrò prepotentemente nell’immaginario e nella cultura comune per quel suo aspetto così unico e caratteristico che tanto bene si sposava col ruolo che inaugurò la sua carriera cinematografica ne L’uomo che cadde sulla terra.
In questa pellicola, ambientata in un campo di prigionia giapponese durante la seconda guerra mondiale, il Maggiore Jack “Strafer” Celliers prende volto e fascino di Bowie e con essi quella stessa aria aliena del ruolo precedente. Una leggenda vivente dell’aviazione inglese, solo in pochi hanno avuto l’onore ed il privilegio di poterlo vedere in azione durante le ardite missioni e la sua figura pare divenuta mitica. Uno spirito duro e senza timore, capace di controbattere con un “Il mio passato mi appartiene” durante un interrogatorio militare, ma con uno struggente e drammatico passato dietro sé.
5) Domenico Modugno in Lo scopone scientifico (L. Comencini, ITA, 1972)
Siamo abituati a pensare a Mr. Volare come padre della musica leggera italiana: ricolma di bambine a cui dire addio sotto la pioggia, lontananze che alimentano grandi amori e altre romantiche (per non dire sdolcinate) immagini. Se teniamo conto poi dell’umanità del cantante, dimostrata anche dal suo impegno politico degli ultimi anni, risulta ancor più sorprendente ciò che riesce a rendere in un’agrodolce (più agra che dolce) commedia di Comencini: un essere infimo, megalomane e superbo che con cinismo insinua dubbio, insoddisfazione e malessere nella già misera coppia Sordi-Mangano vendicandosi su di lei per averlo a lungo rifiutato e tentare così per un ultima volta di potersela portare via.
4) Björk in Dancer in the Dark (Lars von Trier, DNK, ARG, FIN, FRA, DEU, ISL, ITA, NLD, NOR, ESP, SWE, USA, GBR, 2000)
Il regista danese è famoso per i suoi tanti e stravaganti comportamenti costantemente sopra le righe. La sua convinzione, secondo la quale maltrattare gli attori permetta ad essi di dare il meglio nella recitazione, gli ha fatto collezionare non poche lamentele, sfuriate e addii soprattutto dalle rappresentanti del gentil sesso proprio come è successo con la cantante Björk. L’artista islandese iniziava ogni giornata di riprese, letteralmente, sputando in faccia il suo disprezzo a von Trier e si ripromise di non voler mai più apparire in alcuna pellicola, salvo poi ripensarci negli ultimi anni.
In nessun lavoro davanti alla macchina da presa, però, la cantautrice ha più toccato i livelli raggiunti in questo melodrammatico anti-musical, dove le sinfonie vengono create dai rumori di scena in puro stile noise music. Segno che forse, a caro prezzo, i brutali metodi dell’eclettico regista hanno dato i loro frutti.
3) Johnny Hallyday in L’uomo del treno (P. Leconte, FRA, 2003)
Il più grande rocker d’oltralpe aveva una faccia capace di poche espressioni. Ma Dio se l’ha saputa sfruttare bene! Perfetta per quei, neanche pochi, ruoli che ha portato al cinema: sia che fosse un vendicativo pistolero per Corbucci, un organizzatore d’incontri di boxe per Godard o un vecchio sicario per To, quel suo viso un po’ storto ma tanto affascinante lasciava comunque trasparire l’essenziale sotto la scorza di duro e puro a cui prestava quasi sempre il proprio volto.
Ed è in questa commedia, con risvolti drammatici, che viene sfruttata al meglio per chi vi scrive; un misterioso ramingo si trova a condividere l’alloggio con un vecchio professore in pensione. Le due personalità così agli opposti arriveranno ad abbattere i muri che potrebbero dividerli in una maniera per niente stucchevole, come solo i registi francesi sanno fare, per scoprire non solo di avere qualcosa in comune ma che la vita di uno è ciò che più al mondo desidererebbe l’altro.
Nel poetico finale i nostri protagonisti saranno costretti, come cantava Caterina Caselli, a morir un po’ per poter vivere, anche solo nelle loro fantasie, quell’esistenza tanto agognata ma per cui non hanno mai trovato il coraggio di affrontarla.
2) Enzo Jannacci in L’udienza (M. Ferreri, ITA, 1972)
Vi avverto già che qui sarò di parte ma quando più amori si ritrovano in un unico luogo, fosse esso fatto anche di celluloide, è impossibile non venirne attratti.
“Mi trovo in una situazione kafkiana” ripete Amedeo, protagonista d’una critica a religione, potere ma anche all’ossessione umana, che non poteva trovare migliore incarnazione nella figura di Jannacci, da sempre il più giullaresco fra i nomi del canzoniere italiano.
Un giovane ufficiale che vuole parlare a tutti i costi col Papa senza però rivelare a nessuno il perché e che viene rimbalzato da un consigliere all’altro e addirittura “corrotto” con le grazie di una delle più belle donne del creato, affinché possa desistere dalla sua missione. È così che la grottesca satira fila per tutta la durata del film passando anche per scene assurde e bellissime. Vedere che poi il buon Enzo si ritrovi davanti una Claudia Cardinale in déshabillé farà nascere in chiunque un’immane invidia.
1) Tom Waits in Parnassus- L’uomo che voleva ingannare il diavolo (T: Gilliam, GBR, CAN, FRA, 2009)
Il cantautore di Pomona dalla voce rauca è uno degli uomini più belli al mondo ed è inutile che neghiate ciò: non vi ascolterò.
Ringrazio ogni volta che appare sullo schermo quella sua faccia lunga su cui brillano quegli occhi turchini (qui quasi sempre nascosti da uno stiloso paio d’occhiali) e solcata da quelle rughe, ognuna delle quali non fa che accrescere il fascino di questo artista e danzare ad ogni espressione, spesso così adorabilmente sopra le righe.
